Internet cafe setup

If I remember correctly, at the computer faire last year, I saw a product that allows you to have up to 4 people working off 1 pc as a workstation. Wasn't expensive either.

Thanks again.

Alright, that wasn't really as complicated as you'd warned it would be conradl :D

Then ATM, The best thing would be to get 16 (+4 admin) TC's and connect them to a server.

Getting 1 x TSCAL per TC could run the costs a bit high, but I suppose there isn't a way around that.

I would prefer to get TC's not pre-installed with MS but as Asha'Man X said, the software could be either: unavailable (which I doubt though) or too complicated for those not used to linux.

Would he really need an MS SBS CAL?

With all this in mind, what type of specs do you think the server pc should have? I'm thinking something with 4gb of DDR2, 500Gb storage and an Intel core 2 duo/quad?

Oh yeah, about the line. If I get two 4mb lines, I'll need two routers also, how would I connect them both to the server and then split each line across the 8 computers in series? (As in the picture in the OP). Would it need 2 ethernet cards?

Why don't you look at that Vox line thing, where they converge a number of lines to give you anything up to 20mbit depending on your needs?

THOUGHT

Hi ,

Have you stopped to consider what your CLIENTS want

No good putting in all sorts of systems without ascertaining what facilities / software your clients are likely to want / need / feel comfortable with.

You can run a Linux thin client that looks pretty much like windows and runs Open Office and other stuff peeps want.
Just use some cheap re-furb "biscuit tin" PC's. NO HDD , NO license fees -- cheap initial setup. You DO need good monitors -- preferably LCD type 19-20".

Your server then needs a lot of protection / security. That is where you should spend your money.

Good Server
Good Switches
Good Router

If you get a re-furb Cisco MODULAR router you can just add in ADSL cards as you need them.
You can definitely aggregate them -- even possibly bond them. Not had a look at that yet.

You DO need a system whereby if there is a problem you just re-boot the PC and get a clean fresh image ( Makes life a LOT easier )

You DO need a time / billing / bandwidth control system.

You DO need a "bullet-proof" infrastructure / system ( peeps / clients do NOT like downtime )

Please tell us what you eventually do.

Well this morning I sent through a compilation of everything that I've come across and have given MY client all the available options; as to what he's going to go with is his decision in the end.

I have mentioned the option of a free distro OS with a simple GUI, so we'll see whether or not he likes that idea. As for the TC's, I'm pretty sure that HIS clients will be happy with them as they give them the options to plug in whatever USB devices they'd want to plug in.

Thanks for the info about the modular router, that will come in handy when he wants to upgrade his line speed.

Now I'm just waiting to hear back from him.

Where did you guys order your TC's from? The two companies that I mentioned earlier are useless as I've phoned and emailed them both multiple times, and still I don't have a price for their hardware.
