Internet clamp down warning

As British courts began Friday to process the first cases of rioters accused of inciting violence through the use of social networking sites, the government was warned of “playing a dangerous game” by planning to clamp down on the internet.

Clamping down on the internet is like trying to hold water in your fist. The harder you squeeze the the more will slip through your fingers.

Actually blocking the sites is quite simple for ISPs to do. They already do this for certain sex perversion sites and sites which are used for criminal purposes.

In certain circumstances, it seems obvious that for national security reasons, certain sites should be blocked until calm has been restored. Likewise, the SMS messaging systems offered by the cell phone companies, could be suspended for a period of time. The problem is, these disruptions would have a severe impact on businesses.

The so-called experts who believe that you can't block web sites should visit China. Then they will learn how it is done.

And then VPN's etc pop up and people start using other methods to distribute information. Thats what I am getting at.

Poor little brain-washed sheep, I feel sorry for you.

It's funny when a democracy starts doing this.. :P

Yeah, don't worry your little head about it. Uncle Government will take care of everything. They know best what's best for you.

Egypt also did this (they shut down the net and sms) during their riots and the UK ripped them a new one for doing it. Its going to interesting to see how the UK spin this lol.

anything to stop the riots, I think it is ridiculous savage behavior.

I think it is a great idea, I also heard that some people used public transport in London to get to the places, so maybe they must clamp down on public transport - they are the people that took them to cause the riots! Then the retailers that sold them food and clothing so that they can have the energy to do this - they must be dealt with severely and swiftly. They need to investigate if some people used cellphones to coordinate the attacks - just ban these phones.

They should investigate the reason behind all of this. People don't go around commiting crimes just cause it's fun. This guy wrote a good article about it http://t.co/n2sn0Sb

+1

It would be sad if this happened. This would make them no better than the worst totalitarian regimes. The Internet is just a medium, just as the telephone, post or carrier pigeon was before. You can shut down the medium but people will just switch to another to communicate.
