For the past 3 months during the evenings usually from 5pm till 1am(varies) my ADSL line loses internet, I will remain synced to the exchange, but there's no internet for small durations. Happens every 10 -20 min sometimes even every 2 min. I've reported it to Telkom 20 times now and they do nothing about it, they test my line during the day and because it doesn't lose connection to the exchange they say there's no problem.

I've tried new cables, router, filters, formatted PC, had Telkom refresh my ports. I have no geyser switch, no alarm on the line, no electric fencing, no electric gate and no timers on my premises

Ive monitored my SNR margin values
when its working: (downstream)
SNR margin 21dB
line attenuation value 40 - 45 dB
when it breaks: (downstream)
SNR margin -7dB or sometimes the values disappear
line attenuation value 60 - 70+ dB or sometimes the values disappear

I really need help don't know what to do next, Telkom keeps ignoring it and blindly say there's nothing wrong

It's because your exchange gets too congested in the evenings. Nothing will be done so save yourself the time..
I had the exact same problem for 8 months and yesterday, I finally gave up. I had to downgrade my line from 4mb to 1mb just to keep my snr margins up. I opened dozens of tickets, spoke to all sorts of telkom employees, went through different departments ect ect.. nothing but lies and denial from telkom. According to them, it's a very strange problem, yet I see many people complaining of the exact same thing!

My problems began the exact same day they upgraded my exchange to support 10mb! Coincidence? So telkoms claims of "upgrading" the exchanges seems to be downgrading them!

Simple answer, they are a monopoly, they don't care, it's not their problem, tough luck......

Thing is I made them downgrade me to a 1mb and I still had the same problem so technically all I can do is get a 521 or 384 even though my area supports 10 meg and if so technically everyone in my area should be having the same problem, so we have a 10meg exchange but we all going to use 394/512 lines.....Brilliant gotta love Telkom.

Yup, pretty much..
Ask them to put you on 384 and just try that for a day or two to make sure it works. Lowering your speed will raise your snr margins. I used to get 12.0 on 4mb and now I get 10.5 on 1mb, so thanks telkom for upgrading my exchange!
At night, on 4mb, it would drop to -7 -8 (which I didn't even think was possible)..

I have exactly the same problem. My ADSL seems to just crawl to a halt after hours and on weekends. Can somebody look at my SNR and let me know if they are ok? MWeb seems to think my line is too noisy. - But I've tried to log a fault with telkom, but they say they don't really see an issue.

Those numbers are perfect.. Are these the stats that you get when you're having the problems tho? Or did you take these figures when the line was running fine?..

The higher the SNR margins, the better. And the lower the attenuation, the better. Yours are great, but see if the SNR's are dropping at night (when the problems is actually occurring). Either way, it's probably that the exchange is too congested at night which, is a telkom problem, not mweb..

Mine's looks similar during the day but my attenuation (downstream) is at 45.5 dB constantly, and to my knowledge that shouldn't change, my SNR normally is at +-26dB (downstream), in the evenings its goes to +-15dB(downstream) and when I dc or the internet dies it goes to -7dB(downstream) or sometimes the values just disappear and everything is blank.

The thing is that I don't understand how it can be congestion because even at 1:30am it's still like that and even at 2:30 am sometimes, and how is it some days its starts at 4pm and other days at 9pm or 11pm. Even when it breaks some days it every 20 min in sequence other days every 10 min or even every 30 sec. If it was just congestion then it should be the same time everyday with a similar sequence, because I doubt people change their habits on a daily basis.

Sometimes restarting of my modem fixes the problem for like 15 min and other days it doesn't.

All I can do now is wait for a Telkom tech to come, but I doubt that's going to happen anytime soon :(

Both the line attenuation and SNR figures are very good. I can't see it being a synching issue with those stats......SNR and line attenuation can change maybe by 2 to 3 increments due to time of the day......not a whole 20DB!

Have you tried using another router/modem on the line to see if th issue persists?

That's while the problem was occurring. I'll try keep note of the speed vs noise over the next few days and see if it changes.

My internet is "usable", but very slow, and if i constantly ping the gateway's ip, if get a timeout every twenty or so ping.
