Internet Explorer 9 RC launched

I am still on Windows XP, the corporate company I work for will not be upgrading soon. Would have loved to try it out.

Installed IE9 RC1 on my Windows 7 64-bit pc and it's working ok & nothing special.

Ok, back to Google Chrome 9. :)

The company is now focused on encouraging developers to build new websites and user experiences on IE9, said Ziad Ismail, Internet Explorer’s director of product management.

“The release candidate is a major milestone that signals it’s time for developers to start taking advantage of IE9’s features,” Ismail said. “Our focus with IE9 has been on creating the platform for the next class of Web experiences built around HTML5 and tapping into the power of the whole PC.”

Looks like MS haven't lost their long-standing mentality that the Web is much much more than just IE. Websites should be built according to standards, and not according to browsers.

I wonder how standards-compliant IE9 is going to be, especially in comparison to Chrome 10 and FF 4. IE9 will be the most standards-compliant IE browser yet, but how close will they get to Chrome and FF?

All other mainstream browsers are cross platform. Im running Ubuntu Desktop at work, so until they port it to Linux. Not interested. Chrome ftw :D

"IE9's features" are just allowing things like Jump Lists on Windows 7 and to have media controls on the on the Taskbar.
Such as: http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb303/Comidt/Twitter.png
and http://weblogs.asp.net/blogs/lduveau/image_2E19D6C2.png

It's not a requirement just an additional thing that makes it easier for users to take advantage of the site.

Quite an interesting post at http://windowsteamblog.com/ie/b/ie/archive/2011/02/10/internet-explorer-9-hits-rc-milestone.aspx
Just a quote from it:
•LIVESTRONG.COM, who implemented dynamic jump lists at IE9 Beta release, found that IE9 users spent 53% more time on the site and are 40% more likely to return.
•Huffington Post found that users who pinned Huffington Post to their Windows 7 taskbar spent 49% more time on the site.
•Hi5 found that users who pinned the site became much more active responding to 3x more social requests (like new friends, game invites, messages).

Websites want more traffic on their site and by integrating the site more with the Win7 desktop it makes it easier to return and make use of websites.

EXACTLY what I thought when I read "encouraging developers to build new websites and user experiences on IE9" and "start taking advantage of IE9’s features". As a web developer, you can't help but despair when reading that... MS trying to be smart pretending they're the browser monopoly when infact their browser is so far behind and out of touch with the likes of Firefox, Chrome & Opera... No web developer cares about "taking advantage of IE9's features" if those features are not consistent with the common web standards / other browsers, simple as that. MS can go @#$% themselves already, seriously, I know I'm not alone when I say I'm tired of having to code in parallel just to appease IE6 users, and I refuse to give IE9 any exclusive attention either.

That's just plain nasty, w1z4rd!

You can run IE9 in a virtual box and entertain everyone at work. :D

Just 50% faster in the Javascript department: :)
Sunspider test
IE 9 RC ~ 239.9ms http://bit.ly/gpEqrb
Chrome 9 ~ 388.6ms http://bit.ly/dNrq20

I don't care how fast it is, it doesn't have the "Google Chrome to Phone Extension". :(

Nowadays I'm so lazy, if I see a nice wallpaper, address link in Google Maps, etc. it's a quick right-click and the link pops up on my HTC Desire HD. That's how life should be. :)

Yes, Addons are definitely a BIG negative in IE. They need to realise that a browser is more than a browser, addons play a big part in doing so.
Still no spell checker...

Oh, by the way, it actually does: http://sitetophone.com/ The developers have made it cross platform.

???

I'm sticking with Firefox 3.6.13 even when IE9 gets released! :p

Well with a Namby Pamby attitude like that do you ever think you will progress, i mean come on, change... it happens.

IE9 is brilliant, if you dont think so you probably have not used it. Firefox on the other hand.... simple simple simple.

Well the RC still doesn't pass the Acid3 test, but gets 95/100. But it is much better than IE 8 which received 20/100.

Opera >10 pass 100, lol even Opera Mini 5 gets 98/100.
New Webkit browsers also pass the Acid3 test, that includes Safari and Chrome.

Mozilla Firefox 3.6.12 gets 94/100, and Mozilla Firefox 4.0b9pre gets 97/100

Its a pity that Microsoft still makes it sound that IE is the only browser on the planet.

As for the integration with the desktop, no thanks, just sounds like an security hole waiting to be exploited. Seeing that IE has a bad history with being "safe".

Edit: Here is a better breakdown of how IE 9 competes with its competition

Code:
Browser Sunspider	Acid 3 ECMA 5 HTML5 Test Fishtank HTML5 Canvas
Opera 11.01 281,5ms 100% 47,09% 177+7/300 22-24fps
Chrome 9b 274,9ms 100% 81,80% 242+13/300 26-29fps
Firefox 4b11 289,3ms 97% 91,26% 207+9/300 55-59fps
Safari 5.0.3 403,8ms 100% 71,68% 150/300 fail/freezes
IE 9 RC 241,0ms 95% 15,94% 116+5/300 45-48fps
IE 9 Beta 378,2ms 95% 16,26% 96+3/300 45-48fps

Browser Indep. HTML5 Canvas Peace keeper
Opera 11.01 14,77fps 6960
Chrome 9b 31fps 7854
Firefox 4b11 1 fps 3975
Safari 5.0.3 fail/freezes 4040
IE 9 RC 6,30fps 4869
IE 9 Beta 2505

As you can see, IE 9RC, still isn't as "standards compliant" as it should be, if it wants to compete fully with its competition.

Yep, IE has definitely got there in the speed, no point denying that, it is the fastest browser in terms of rendering (with the GPU) and Javascript. If you guys don't believe the tests, try it and you'll see.
There is still some way too go on the standards although it is infinitely better than IE ever has been and is creeping up to the top as well.

For most of te population, IE is the only browser. Unless you know what the Internet Browser is, other than the big blue e, there is not much else to look at. Now they've made IE9 a really good browser and will not need to be replaced by others.

Running Firefox Beta v4.0b11
Loving it!
Thanks for that bit of irrelevant information.

My Sunspider results:

IE 9 RC - 158.8ms
Chrome 9.0.597.98 - 170.3ms
Firefox 3.6.13 550.1ms
