Internet Explorer just closes?

I actually dont mind outlook express, I have never been infected by any worm via outlook express. I think the reason is that I am such a pc junkie that I am so carefull about what i open in my inbox.

I do wish it had spam filtering. I have tried thuderbird and it did not cut it for me

Raise your hand if your restore your image and create a new one every time there's a new M$ patch out there ? <<-- this is the level of geekydom and vigilance I rely on.

If you were such a pc junkie, you would know that you dont need to open the emails in order to be infected. Just downloading them is good enough.

I use AVG 7 on my pc and Avast on my laptop. Avast has more control over what it scans in the emails

'just by downloading them is good enough' ?

i must be so naive.

/me cancels his email account.

Actually it is true - unpatched/unhotfixed M$ machines will experience all sorts of vulnerabilities, Outlook Express as well as Outlook have component dependencies on Internet Explorer bits & bobs, there are loads of vulnerabilities that have been exploited & don't require an email to actually be opened, and there are others that don't require an attachment to be opened before it installs malware.

while you are at it, cancel your internet account too. You could be infected within seconds of connecting to the net. Even without opening any programs. The joys of using windows

FYI
An XP PC running SP1 was breached by an intruder through a hole that the Sasser worm used, only four minutes into the test. Within fifteen minutes two intrusions took place, one using the MS Blaster hole. Within ten hours hackers had established an irc channel and the machine was broadcasting its vulnerabilities to the world at large. A Windows Small Business Server was similarly compromised, with the intruder uploading a program which gave full control of the machine

You would be better off cancelling out your insecurity products, with products that are more secure (nothing is ever 100% secure).

Just get firefox, an get everyone u know to do the same.
There is however no harm in keeping xp up to date tho, IE isnt the only part of the OS that is buggy or insecure and the one drawback wit firefox is that u cant access the win update page, so i suppose MS still hav us needing IE...at least for a while...

A friend of mine, was running and surfing with a newly installed machine without any protection. After 23 seconds he had his first malware and after an hour he removed about 23 virus/worms/dailer/trojan...

Firefox installed - also just closes

Using iburst on Win XP with (and before) latest firmware upgrade I will be browsing along happily, and without warning and with no errors, all my IE browser windows just close. Any websites, local or international.

Have Sygate Personal Firewall, Anti-virus fully up to date, Spybot Search and Destroy installed and immunized, XP Service Pack 1 with almost all latest patches. UTD via USB in Bryanston base station.

Any ideas?
After various suggestions that I ditch IE and install Firefox, I did. Guess what?? Firefox does the exact same thing - Firefox just closes.
Have also ditched dialup connection, will have to resurect to test dialup. As this MAY be unrelated to iburst, I shall post on MS as an XP error.
