Internet Promo 5 vs Prepaid Bundle Speeds

Got me the Internet Promo 5 contract a couple of weeks back.

Prepaid bundles (on a different sim) - super fast internet, great gaming, youtube don't need no pausing, no issues
Promo 5 - webpage timeouts, yet to buffer an entire video on youtube (Youtube's April 1 video stopped halfway like every other video), all round dire perormance.

Is this normal? lsusb says its an E398 Huawei dongle. For the record, the dongle always receives an HSPA+ signal.

Also when idle? Check for background data transfer.

The dongle does this weird little thing, well awesome thing to be honest. Dark blue when idle (plain 3G), but usually HSPA+ (blue-cyan) kicks in when there's activity.

No background data (according to firewall, taskmgr, netstat); the firewall has a satisfactory set of rules.

Tonight seems...better. For instance, youtube takes quite a while to load a page, but once it loads the video buffers quickly. Also, downloads are going at 100-300KB/s. Will test this further vs prepaid bundles.

Prepaid may be roaming to MTN network. Promo is restricted to 8ta's own network.

MDMA will tell you if you are accessing different towers with the different SIM's and if the prepaid one is roaming or not.

Internet promo 5 is up and down on the download speeds but browsing has always worked fine for me. From 6am yesterday to 2am this morning I only managed to torrent 400mb. Thats 400mb in 20 hours. However from 2am to 6am this morning I torrented about 6GB. Speeds were close to 700KB/s at times. Pulled down 6GB in 4 hours.

In Hatfield i never get more than 2megs/ps on my internet promo 5, that's only at night. During the day, not more than 0.8mb/ps....

How many signal bars is your device shown? Possibly could be too many varsity students have taken up this offer, only works during the night when it's less congested. I haven't experienced any issues whatsoever on the base station I connect 2.
