Internet wake-up call

pfft
since when does the govt give a crap about the state of our broadband... they can't even bothered with the crime, I don't think we have a hope in hell

:p

More like, if I want to stay in this country, there isn't too much I can do about it. But I also won't go around spreading propaganda in the hopes of somehow creating a scare that will cause telecoms to get their service on par with first world countries.

It's about the principle mate...
I honestly believe the complacency of our citizens is one of the major reasons our country is on such a downward slope

lol, just lol dude. You obviously like working and handing over more of your hard earned money for service that is lower than other countries in the world.

But you are right, the south african way is just to complain about it on a forum. It's much easier to sit behind a computer screen knowing all the answers than to actually go out in the real world and do something.

The problem is that do something will cost you R100K to just get a license. Where is your equipment, customers advertising. Telkom have been here for ages, and yet they are sitting on THEIR ass doing nothing for the average Joe, that just wants decent internet. Is that to hard to ask? Apparently it is. :(

I get the principle, believe me...

But running around making unsubstantiated claims is counter productive. Rather give us some hard evidence that we are trailing countries like Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco, etc.

Instead of just saying "zomg! nigeria has more interwebz users than sa!", and then not backing it up with anything.

I agree, the state of our telecommunications infrastructure is lacking. But it's nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. And it's not as if NO-ONE is working on it.

How many "legal" South Africans own a PC? Surely this will influence these "stats"?

Or is it based on access to a PC to be able to access the internet?

Instant nuclear detonation! Define citizens and define the scope of the comment please.

I feel really sorry for people that have "local-only" accounts. The day that I'm forced to use one of those accounts is the day that I start watching TV again! With the exception of a handful of sites, the state of the Internet in SA is a disgrace (embarrassment), IMO.

Says YOU!!! Our telecoms are world class, delivering cutting edge service at good quality. You are just upper class and racsist!

The article says nothing like that. Go read again. http://mybroadband.co.za/news/Internet/7170.html

"the country is growing its Internet penetration at a much slower rate than any other country in Africa"

"Between December 2000 and 2008, South Africa has added only about 2.7 million new subscribers to its Internet user base, compared to the 10 million added by Nigeria, the 8 million added by Egypt, the 7 million added by Morocco and the 3 million added by Kenya"

Internet growth statistics released in Hyderabad, India during the recent Internet Governance Forum Meeting show that South Africa has fallen a long way in the African Internet rankings since 2000, when it had 2.4 million subscribers representing 53% of Internet users across the continent. Today, South Africa represents only nine percent of Africa's total Internet subscriber base with 5.1 million users.
2.4 million in 2000

Between December 2000 and 2008, South Africa has added only about 2.7 million new subscribers to its Internet user base, compared to the 10 million added by Nigeria, the 8 million added by Egypt, the 7 million added by Morocco and the 3 million added by Kenya.
2.4 million + 2.7 million = 5.1 million

5.1 million < 10 million
5.1 million < 8 million
5.1 million < 7 million

I think YOU need to read again.

And Nigeria having twice as many Internet users as South Africa? I call BS. Where are the sources? According to that article, Egypt and Morocco ALSO have more Internet users than in South Africa. That's, what, triple BS? Show me the statistics.

That's right. We're in 4th position. Have a look here: -

and here: -

Perhaps you didn't notice that SA has fallen from having 53% of Internet users in Africa to only having 9.5%?

The problem is that do something will cost you R100K to just get a license.

Nope. It's not finalised yet, but the cost of a Class ECNS or ECS license is expected to be around R10,000, not R100,000.

Don't expect to ever be offered an ITA (Invitation To Apply) for an Individual license. With 544 of each already available, it's a whole lot easier just to buy one that someone else isn't using.

Yes, you're right. You still need to add the cost of equipment and infrastructure.

It's never been easy to be an ISP. For those with the courage, it's now possible to do more than just offer services piggy-backing on someone else's infrastructure. This may well have a positive effect in offering services in places where they haven't been available before, and also in bringing down prices. It won't happen overnight, though.

So you are saying that Nigeria had 0 users in 2000 and have added 10 million in 8 years (see chart on internet world stats link). Population of 140 million.

SA had 2,4 million in 2000 and 5,1 million in 2008. Population of 48 million.

So proportionally fewer Nigerians have access to internet than South Africans...?

What hope is there when Nigeria is used as the yardstick?

Ok, I question the authenticity of the report. How do we know the nigerians didnt scam the setup??:D:D

2.4 million in 2000

2.4 million + 2.7 million = 5.1 million

5.1 million < 10 million
5.1 million < 8 million
5.1 million < 7 million

I think YOU need to read again.

NO, I don't need to read it again, I understood it the first time.
