Internet wake-up call

Don't worry, this was probably the fault of the apartheid government.

erm

I wasn't around in the industry during the apartheid gov. I can say that I've been around for the last 10 years, and I can definately say that our government has not only not done much to stimulate the industry, but they've harmed it in many ways

Yeah and forgot to improve the current infrastructure like Eskom, Roads and Transport. We'll just ride on the previous regime's stuff. And then blame them for not making it idiot proof.

Why not make a poll where we ask all Mybroadband users how they feel about SEACOM/Internet and if we will actually see a huge benefit this year from SEACOM? I'm willing to bet a lot are negative.

"We must ask why government insisted on retaining ownership in the major telecommunication networks when it clearly hasn't been in the best interests of the country and its citizens,"

um...cos they are GREEDY sums of beaches???? :D

ISPA can ask them, they just wont get the answer they like or no answer at all.

We're a long way off from having satisfactory Internet penetration, and must ask ourselves what has gone wrong.

Government can ask me and I will tell them...free of charge too.

We hope that South Africa's poor performance benchmarked against its peers in the rest of the continent will shock regulators and policymakers into rethinking their approach.

Somehow I doubt that very much.

Government won't even wake up even if they're hit in the face with a ten-ton statue to the memory of our laughable broadband situation.

The only reason the current government even cares about any form of telecommunications is because of the 2010 worldcup and the fact that Telkom, their golden child, wouldn't have been able to cut it.
That's the only reason seacom is going ahead, the only reason massive infrastructure (to the stadiums at least) has been built, etc.
They care about lying to the people in order to get their votes and keep their pockets brimming. Blaming the apartheid regime and saying they will actually fix the various problems in SA, i.e. crime, homelessness, joblessness, achieves what they want, which is control.

Definitely the apartheidsregime, "but we see it as a challenge.. sic, and okkol will be done it.

I totally agre, Read the political thread here ->

And I'll say it again, Go Vote, Let's get these current arseholes that are
screwing up our country out of our government.

The real question is what this has cost SA in terms of deterring entrepenuers and IT startups. Lets not worry about that, just go have a shower and all will be right.

if the government would allow for others to enter the market in the first place then internet would be cheaper, faster, better, and there would be millions of people who currently dont have internet, signing up for internet.

the government just doesnt know how to make money. They charge a fortune for internet therefore the following happens....

1) you hardly have any consumers compared to the rest of africa therefore smaller income.

2) you spend more of your net income on internet, therefore your spending habits decrease due to lack of finances, making it harder for medium size enterprises (talking about in any field) to compete as you spend less money at shops therefore economy doesnt grow as fast as what the government wants it to grow.

3) The government wants our country to be turned into a first world country, but yet they dont set regulations into place, therefore access to information is extremely high compared to the rest of africa.

hell i bet you once robert mugabe is gone zimbabwe will grow 5 x faster than us as we still getting screwed down the line.

here's a thought ANC...if you want my vote next election (not the 1 comming as you full of promises and you dont follow through so i wont vote for you,......as well as many others i know), then do something about the cost of broadband etc and then i will consider voting for you in 4 years time, but right now you always say bl;a bla bla bla bla, and then you never follow through, so i wont be voting for you guys until i get a 1MB line uncapped unshapped, no threshold for R300.

Another job well done at DOC. Bonuses all round!

blah blah blah <insert more anti-government, anti-Telkom propaganda here>

Sure, we pay a lot for our broadband Internet usage. More than other countries in the world. But it's not as bad as made out by most.

And Nigeria having twice as many Internet users as South Africa? I call BS. Where are the sources? According to that article, Egypt and Morocco ALSO have more Internet users than in South Africa. That's, what, triple BS? Show me the statistics.

Can people please find me some ISPs exclusive to Nigeria? How about Egypt? Or Morocco? If these places have more users than South Africa, why do they seem to be using mostly South African-based ISPs ?

lol, just lol dude. You obviously like working and handing over more of your hard earned money for service that is lower than other countries in the world.

But you are right, the south african way is just to complain about it on a forum. It's much easier to sit behind a computer screen knowing all the answers than to actually go out in the real world and do something.

:p

More like, if I want to stay in this country, there isn't too much I can do about it. But I also won't go around spreading propaganda in the hopes of somehow creating a scare that will cause telecoms to get their service on par with first world countries.
