Inverter + battery VS UPS

i want to spend a small amount like 1.2k

all i want to power is my adsl router for 4 hours

i think its a 12w router
 
Have a look at Teljoy they rent Intellipower out for 399 to 499 6 month minimum rental.

yea but where can i get these batteries from?
i would love to be able to walk into some sort of electronic shop and just purchase them :)
 
Home security shops have them. they use them for the house alarms or you can get from auto shop . saw some at Midas in randburg for R700- 900

I managed to get 3 units for my family last week from Trade Centre - they are one of my ex-clients and I kept in contact - the IntelliPower2 was going for R4799, but they sold out quickly. The sales chap advised that the IntelliPower4 units had not arrived, but they would be getting in again soon.

I got a couple of Exide 102Ah deep-cycle sealed calcium batteries from Midas in Randburg for R999 each - I see that Builder's Warehouse has the Deltec's for R1499! Not sure where to get the 40Ah or 50Ah from...

To Howardb and others, thanks for your imput.
Responding to the comments made:
1. I know that an iron is power hungry. That's why I freaked out.
2. I paid R3999 about a month ago.
3. I blame Tedelex for allowing an unqualified outlet to sell their product.
4. I will have to rearrange my plugs to bypass the unit now that I know
the total load still affects the unit even when the power is not being
drawn from the battery.
Presently I also have my HI FI, DVD recorder, printers etc connected but
all these devices are not used when battery is in use, although the DVD
clock is always on, and my HI FI amps LED's are on. I trust that when my TV or PC is on standby that minimal power is being used.
5. Someone on this forum said that the changeover to battery resulted in
their computer re-booting. This does nor happen to me, except I get disconnected from the internet and have to switch off the modem {router}
then switch on again before I can reconnect.

I tried to get hold of Tedelex SA today to find out where I can purchase two additional double battery cabinets (like the battery cabinets that come with the IntelliPower4 units), and got passed from one department to the other - logic would dictate that I should be able to get assistance from the spares department, but no - was sent to sales, then salaries, then spares, then dispatch...and so on back to switchboard - I gave up in the end.
Just proves that if their head office is like that, then wtf are their agents doing!?

I also don't have this problem when I connect my PC - change-over is seemless -- maybe he had too many items connected, or maybe his PC power supply unit is just sensitive - it could be a similar situation with your router power adapter - just sensitive. Barrymore, if I may ask, the switch at the back of your unit - is it set to wide or narrow? I had mine on wide, and it caused problems with my PC - set it to narrow and everything is now fine...

I just had my Tedelex Intellipower 4 delivered to my house yesterday - could not believe how heavy it is - impossible to lift on your own!

Otherwise first test with LCD TV and DVD player worked out great! Very impressed with the device so far...
 
Please be careful when using these devices! The house supply has a Earth Leakage unit that is there for our protection. This is bypassed when we use external supplies.

When using a Inverter or Gennie or UPS there is no protection against electrocuting ones self!

Are you sure?

My gennie is still connected to the earth, even though the main switch is turned off at the MB - same goes for my UPS (afaik). So as far as my calculations go, the same danger is still there to be electrocuted with or without the Gennie/UPS being used. Not sure how the inverters are put together though...

If the gennie output is earthed and its L and N are connected before the Earth Leakage (On its input) Then you will be protected, because the leakage kicks out and opens the circuit if it detects a 20mA leakage to earth.

So.. For the leakage unit to be able to protect you, it must be between you and the power source.

Just got my Intellipower2 from Catz Digital, Fourways for R4 999. I will be writing my review after a few days of testing.

...approx 65kg's - need to be a weight-lifter to "pick it up" :D
You should have no problems running those two items off the unit - will give you more than enough backup time - you may also be able to run a PC / laptop and your hifi (depending on the power ratings) at the same time...

I think you'll be impressed with the unit and it's capabilities.

The only "negative" I had with these units was with the square-to-round pin adapter -- they should have either changed the output plugs to SA round plugs, or included another adapter, 'cos the ones they sell here in the stores are cr@p. I've ordered two sets of decent square pin plugs (13 amp) from the UK, and will replace the moulded plugs from my extendaplug with these, and plug them straight into the Intelli unit - I will use a similar trick for my new 3000w inverter that arrived last week from the USA - just looking for a couple of decent 2 or 4-bay battery cabinets, and will test further.
 
To Howardb - I checked the battery - it is 100ah.

While there is no load shedding is it better to have my inverter unit switched off or should it be on at all times? I'm thinking of what's best for the battery.

It would be better to switch it off. The inverter uses about 0.1-0.5A (depending on the quality of the inverter) and in turn does a very slow discharge on the battery (this is like having your TV or HiFi on standby) which is obviously not going to discharge it in one day, but does shorten the lifespan a little.
 
Instead of switching the Intellipower off until loadshedding comes back again - is it not better to unplug the unit from the wall once a week and let it go through a 2-3hour cycle of powering my equipment in a ad-hoc "load-shed" cycle and then let it recharge itself by plugging it back into the wall socket afterwards - is this not a best practice with regards to keeping the batteries in perfect condition?
 
To Howardb.
We had an eight hour power outage on Sunday.
I switched on the inverter and the battery went flat after two
hours. I had the following items running at the time.
1. 54cm TV 300w ?
2. Satelite decoder 0.3A 66w ?
3. TV areal power booster 60mA 13w
4. TV setback amp. ?
5. DVD recorder - only clock running ?
6. Fish tank pumps - total 46w
7. Fish tank heaters - not on continuously 150w
8. Modem - on, but not in use ?
9. Modem surge protector 400mA 88w

Items also connected, but not switched on.
1. Computer
2. Monitor
3. 12w lamp
4. 94w fish tank lights.

The TV areal circuit runs thru the various items above, so if I
disconnect, say the DVD recorder, then the picture is snowy.
