Inverter + battery VS UPS

When I bought the unit, the young salesman helped carry the heavy box to my car, where we placed it in the boot, LAYING IT ON IT'S SIDE.

advised me to take the unit to a repair shop where they were to change the battery. They actually replaced the entire case as acid corrosion was evident inside the case. I was assured that the entire case and battery was new.

Today on arriving home from work, the unit was beeping madly. I was confused as no load shedding had taken place.
The maid had decided to do the ironing in the lounge and had plugged the iron
into the circuit leading to the unit.
What I have learnt from this is that even if the power is on, and the unit is not running, it must still not be overloaded.
Presumably if it is switched off, this would not be the case.

Do you have any idea how much power an iron uses? A mother-load of wattage. I can't remember all the details about battery care, but I don't remember laying a battery on it's side has ever been a good idea.
 
Ok so our iron is a little um.... super-powered. But you get my drift.

These sales clowns sound like absolute cowboys - I would hate to think what their storage policy is for the main storeroom - unbelievable!!

Barrymore, my suggestion is to take the whole unit back and demand a swop-out for a brand new sealed unit - don't accept anything less...

Very true - you cannot exceed the unit rating, as it's in-line - if the unit is switched off, then no power should go through at all.
 
Just for info, I see these Tedelex Intellipower units are now available at Hi Fi Corporation for R48xx.00. Considering one for my lounge (HiFi amp standby, DVD Recorder, PVR, PS3 and LCD TV +8w standing lamp).
Will however wait until they are available from Makro or Game somewheres more reliable.

Would be a good idea. I have had some problems with warranties and stuff at HiFi Corp. (I bought an item and upgraded the warranty to a <2week, but ended up waiting over 3 weeks for it to be returned....)

Thats ridiculous - having to upgrade a warranty just to get it back in a reasonable time!! They suck.

The battery gave in after about 3 years (due to what I like to call the "Samsung-Boepens-Battery Problem"* - aka Non-HiFi Corp. problem). The new battery is arriving today. :D

Edit:
*Weird problem - 2 Samsung batteries in our house suddenly got a boepens and lost almost all its ability to hold charge in about a month.

Just saw a computer shop in a shopping mall have Intellipower 4 Units for R8,000

Places always trying to make a quick buck.

You can easily get them for R7,000 at other places and lots will do R6,500 with a little negotiation. Even cheaper if you buy a number of units.


Just like rechargeable lamps. Their prices have suddenly doubled compared to 6 months ago. Thats if you can find stock locally.

yup can agree with you the prices have doubled for anything to do with power from an alternate source. I dread to think what will happen if Es*** get their way with the price increase . :eek:
