Inverter + battery VS UPS

Your TV uses around 150W. Not sure about your "TV setback amplifier" (what is it anyways) and your modem should use around 20-30W (max).
What capacity (Ah reading) is your battery? Also, what is the capacity of your inverter?

Note: Not Eskom's fault. They did not do anything this weekend (maintenance, power station fire, etc)

In my opinion - that is a big load for the Intellipower 2 unit...

FYI - last week whole of East London went dark for four hours - my Intellipower 4 ran on 15w energy-saver lamp, 32inch LCD tv, DSTV PVR, Video machine and DVD player on clock mode only - and a 54cm CRT tv in the bedroom without any hassle for that duration.......

I was pleased as punch when i had my tv blaring across the townhouse complex I am in while everyone else huddles in the dark. Yes I'm nasty. No I didn't feel bad :)

To Howardb.
We had an eight hour power outage on Sunday.
I switched on the inverter and the battery went flat after two
hours. I had the following items running at the time.
1. 54cm TV 300w ?
2. Satelite decoder 0.3A 66w ?
3. TV areal power booster 60mA 13w
4. TV setback amp. ?
5. DVD recorder - only clock running ?
6. Fish tank pumps - total 46w
7. Fish tank heaters - not on continuously 150w
8. Modem - on, but not in use ?
9. Modem surge protector 400mA 88w

Items also connected, but not switched on.
1. Computer
2. Monitor
3. 12w lamp
4. 94w fish tank lights.

The TV areal circuit runs thru the various items above, so if I
disconnect, say the DVD recorder, then the picture is snowy.

"TV setback amplifier" - is a small unit where two TV areal cables plug into
and I think the purpose is to boost reception.
As I stated, the TV areal circuit has to run thru the various items , if not,
my TV picture would be affected.
I think I should disconnect all my fish tank items from the inverter.

The eight hour power cut on Sunday was the second cut on a Sunday
within a month - culprit was Durban Electricity Dept. doing maintenance
work in the road. Most annoying.

I'm not sure why your run time is so low on your unit Barrymore - it could be that the draw is close to the max rating of the unit - I would suggest that you maybe consider adding another battery in parallel - this would increase your backup time. Have a look in the manual that came with the unit to see how it hooks up - I think they said you could add up to 4 batteries in parallel on this unit (in multiples of 2 - either two or four batteries), after which the built-in charger won't be able to cope too well.

If you do decide to do this, I would suggest buying two identical brand/Ah deep cycle batteries, and taking out the one that came with the unit. If you need to add more at a later stage, then try and get the same brand/Ah.

I still haven't heard from Tedelex regarding a double-battery cabinet, so will follow up with them this week. I am hoping that I can buy a double battery cabinet like the one from the IntelliPower4 unit, so I can add another battery to my unit, and have it looking neat and tidy...

Intelli Power 4 at R1999

At the price of R1999 for a complete Intelli Power 4 from Teljoy you might consider rather buying complete sets. This price does normally not even cover the price of the batteries.

Teljoy Intellipower 4.

I ordered one on Wednesday last week and they delivered it free of charge the next day. It even comes with 2 extensions.

What is the VA rating on the Intellipower 4? Price looks good.

This is damn cheap.... paid over 6 grand for mine last year when Eskom was stuffing us around!

Inverter waste of time

Right, it's been a while since load shedding stopped. My unit has been permanently connected to the mains since then.
We have just had a 2 hour interuption to our power supply.
The unit kicked in immediately, keeping my PC and TV running - for about
two minutes before the battery ran flat.
When power was restored it took half an hour to recharge (according to the
green light)

Strange

I test mine every month or so and it performs like new - one power failure it ran for 6hrs with 2 LCD TV'S, 1 PVR, 1 Surround Sound Setup, 2 bedside lamps with energy saving bulbs, MVIX Media Player.

Yeah, very strange. My units are also tested every few months and can still run my 40" LCD, DualView DSTV, 2x 8w energy lamps, DVD HDD recorder and an 8w extension lamp for another room for at least 4-6 hours on my 600w unit (single 12v 105ah battery).
My 1200w unit (twin 12v 105ah batteries) runs my PC, server and wife's PC for 8-10 hours at 75% load.

Is your unit still under warrantly? If so get them to swop it out for you. These units battery(s) should run for at least 4 hours once the mains goes off and they're running components (at 50-75% load).

The charge-up time after a mains failure is usually around the same time that the mains was off for, i.e. a 4 hour mains failure with the inverter running components for 4 hours up to 75% capacity = approx. 4 hours re-charge time.

Yip - totally agree with this - have found with my 1200w that the charge time is almost identical to the time the unit was running off battery.

Tedelex IntilliPower2 Inverter let me down.

Last year, near the end of the scheduled power outages, I bought this unit.
This inverter has been left connected to the mains since then with no power cuts to test it's ability. From time to time I hear it recharging for a few minutes, presumably it looses charge while standing.
Last week we had a two hour power cut - lights out - TV and PC stayed on
as battery kicked in, but after less than half a minute it started beeping, then TV and PC switched off. It did not do the job it was bought for.

It shouldn't be doing that, unless the electricity goes off or there is a faulty connection that is draining the battery - AFAIK it''s a trickle charger on the unit, so if it's always connected to the mains, then itll be topped up automatically - it won't "cycle" the battery when topping up (discharge, then charge), as these batteries are deep cycle, not high cycle.

It did not do the job it was bought for.

It really sounds to me like you got a dud unit - I can't recall what the warranty was on these units, but I'd return it for checking or replacement. It should be able to run your connected items for longer than a few hours, minimum.

Yip-contact the reseller which you bought the unit from there is something wrong with your batteries I think!

Tedelex IntilliPower2 Inverter let me down.

Before I bought this unit I was informed by Tedelex that I had to buy thru
their agent, a Video shop in Durban.
This shop is under new management and no longer sells inverters.
A complaint to Tedelex received no response.

I tried that link - [email protected] - and was suitably assisted and told to take the unit to the Durban branch of Tedelex Service Centre.
Problem was that they are not in Durban proper, but almost an hour's drive
from my home. Well worth the drive, I thought, when they exchanged my unit
for one "in a box"
Back home I unpacked it and discovered that the two adaptors had not been included. {left on my returned unit.}
Also I realised that the unit was not new - scratches on casing and screw missing from plug.
They insisted that it was new despite my telling them of my discovery.
Anyway, a few e-mails later and the adaptors were delivered to my home.
Time to test this unit.
NOTHING - Stone dead - not LED's lit up, nothing.
I've sent them an e-mail expressing my disgust, but doubt anything positive will come of it.

You must have the worst luck with these units Barrymore - hammer them hard and tell them you demand a brand new sealed replacement unit delivered to you before COB Monday - then escalate to the consumer council watchdog.
