IOL,, wtf?

Haven't used the site the entire day out of principle. Please don't shove your soppy political agenda down my throat. So much for objective news.

I think it has been removed now. I am entered their site now and that black screen doesn't pop up (thankfully!)

I just went there for the first time (when I posted before you)... it came up for me?

I think it is important for people to spend a few seconds (and that's all it takes) thinking about the reason for the holiday. I have the same opinion regarding Easter and Christmas.

Why should Muslims/Jews/atheists etc be forced to consider your reasons for your holidays?

Opened it on Opera & Firefox without problems
However Internet Explorer 8 seemed to take forever to load... just closed it eventually

Can't wait for something better than all the windows crap that is so unstable... think its on purpose :)

What IOL have showed you is the effect of the 'Media Classification bill' that is busy doing the rounds in parlament.

Someone-else will decide what you are allowed to read and see!

I'm not going to denounce the majority.

That's a bit of a silly thing for you to do, isn't it? The majority in South Africa wants the death penalty back, for example...

Might don't equal right!

The majority want the death penalty back? I must have missed something or is that speculation?

It's a democracy, if the majority have voted I'm not going to denounce their choice, although I will obviously speak out against what I believe is wrong.

You can't have the death penalty in a corrupt/incompetent justice system.... its pure madness!

I would put it to you that the death penalty is not an issue for the majority of South Africans who voted for the ANC given that it is a stated stance of the ANC that they will not endorse bringing it back.

Well, my IOL failed to open yesterday - just got a white screen after a quick flash of the page.

Well done IOL!

That would imply that people voted for the ANC based on its policies and ability to deliver on them!

I would think that is true. If the ANC had campaigned they would stop grants and BEE I doubt that 65.9% of the voters would have voted for them.

and ability to deliver on them!

could be that the 65.9% believe the ANC to be the party that is most likely to look after their interests.

But outside of trying to guess what drove those to vote for the ANC, all I can say is that in its election rallies the ANC never touched on the death penalty and it continues to state the death penalty stance is a position it will not change. Even after JZ made noises about a possible review of the stance, the ANC came out soon after to reaffirm its position.

And there you have it. JZ is a populist. He wouldn't be saying "We should debate this issue" if it wasn't an issue amongst the people.

i do not think the audience he was addressing was representative of the majority of the country. Otherwise are you saying that what he said to Afrikaners for instance represents what the majority of the country wants just because JZ is a populist.

Dude, it's a claim that can't be proved or disproved because no-one is going to hold a referendum on the matter. Except possibly JZ.

However, I still think it is safe to say that a surprisingly large number of people in south africa would support the return of the death penalty.

wouldn't not holding a referundum show they are sticking to their stance if as you say that the majority support the re-introduction?
