Looking for some advice...

Incredible Connection has two specials on this weekend countrywide - they are selling a 500GB external USB drive for R999 and a 1TB (yip - 1000GB) unit for R1799.

I am tempted by both - actually would love to have the 1TB unit and the pricing is excellent....

Can anyone comment on the quality of Iomega? Will the drives last if handles properly (never dropped and always ejected out of a machine properly)??? I don't want to have one of these things die on me with soo much data stored on them.

Reason for buying - I have a laptop and over 500GB of data which I need to carry around....

Thoughts greatly appreciated....

Check out the thread in the Hardware section about the IC sale.

The 1TB one is going to be too big and heavy to carry around. The 500Gb is smaller but the price is not as attractive as the 1TB.

I would say you would be better off getting an internal 500GB drive and putting it in your own external enclosure.

The 1TB is quite tempting for home use though. It is 2 x 500GB drives inside though so if one fails, then you lose all 1000GB of your data

Read the replies from Incredible Connection Bargins thread. Someone had commented on this product.

I hope the 500gb was a good buy - I bought one today. :)

NB - had they not been out of stock on the 1TB I probably would have gone with that.

IMO the extra cash on the 1TB would have been a good idea. For R900 you can buy a 500GB SATA HDD, and throw it in a case of your own choice for another R200...

But the 1TB I got is still going strong :)

*edit: Just saw your edit :p

Heading to the IC thread now.......

To be fair I will probably hardly lug the drive around - I just don't have a PC at my townhouse.... the the 1TB VERRRY tempting

From the price lists I got, R1799 is a serisouly good buy for the 500GB. the prices for internal drives are R2199 (Seagate) and R1769 (WD). And then you still got to buy the case.

The 500GB drive is way more reasonable.

You wanna run that buy me again there?:p

my 500gb omega cost me R999 last week. from ic, so R1799 is definately not a bargain!

You talking about 500GB or 1TB?

The 1TB is definitely an excellent buy for that price. I got one during the last sale via their website...and after various shipping issues. I've been keeping an eye out for anything that could beat the offer and still haven't found anything that comes close.

It's pretty heavy so won't be ideal as a portable drive, but as a stationary backup it's perfect. Heck I'm tempted to get a second one! ;)

bought one this morning (1TB), and quite impressed, looks like a small car battery (weighs almost as much as one too ;) )

Also have old (3+ years) IOMega drives that still work perfectly, so they're golden

Just don't get if you want firewire/SATA/UTP support, this baby only has a USB connector, thus the cheap price

In terms of quality, I've been running an Iomega ext drive for years. No problems. The only gripe is that they don't have an auto-spin-down feature - the drive is spinning non-stop unless you disconnect it and hit the power button.

Ya, that does not help the noise and heat it produces either.

Nice drive the 500gb - pity is only USB2 and not firewire. :(

I was thinking more of wear and tear / lifetime ... mine isn't hot and you can only hear it when everything else (laptop fan, firewall fan) is off.

Perhaps already mentioned but what make of drive is inside and what is the warranty? The IC site is silent on these facts...
My disk utility says it is a ST350083 0AS Media - which leads me to believe it is a Barracuda® 7200.10 Hard Drive.

Not sure about the warranty - cant put my hands on the box right now.
