Unsurprisingly, almost no Americans are opting in to App Tracking

Almost two weeks after iOS 14.5 started offering the choice of opting in to App Tracking or opting out, analytics data provides the unsurprising evidence that vanishingly few Americans are choosing to allow it.

What’s rather more surprising is that the global opt-in rate is three times higher …

Flurry Analytics is posting daily-updated numbers in a blog post.

Until now, apps have been able to rely on Apple’s Identifier for Advertiser (IDFA) to track users for targeting and advertising purposes. With the launch of iOS 14.5 this week, mobile apps now have to ask users who have upgraded to iOS 14.5 for permission to gather tracking data. With opt-in rates expected to be low, this change is expected to create challenges for personalized advertising and attribution, impacting the $189 billion mobile advertising industry worldwide.

Flurry Analytics, owned by Verizon Media, is used in over 1 million mobile applications, providing aggregated insights across 2 billion mobile devices per month. For this report, Flurry will be updating every weekday by 10am Pacific Standard Time the daily opt-in rate.

They show that launch day opt-in was just 2% of Americans, and the percentage since then has very consistently sat at around 4%.

Globally, however, the opt-in rate is far higher, at around 12%. Flurry’s daily data is based on 5.3M users, of which 2.5M are in the US.

Not looking forward to what this is going to start doing to our Digital Marketing campaigns aimed at iOS users lol but as a consumer I am happy and opted out.

Just 12% of global iOS users and 4% of US ones have allowed app tracking since the iOS 14.5 rollout

Nobody was ever in doubt that Apple's new anti-app tracking (ATT) feature, rolled-out with iOS 14.5 would have a major impact on the way targeted advertisement works and consequently, any company with a business model built around it. Like Facebook and its subsidiaries, like Instagram - some of the most severely-affected parties and naturally among the most vocal against ATT.

Having a hunch that a certain change is significant, though, is not the same as getting some actual data on just how significant it is. The Verizon Media-owned Flurry Analytics has its mobile analytics services integrated in over 1 million mobile applications and collects aggregate insights on over 2 billion mobile devices each month. According to Flurry's data, just around 12% of global users have allowed app tracking for apps that requested it on their devices post the iOS 14.5 update. And that number is just 4% in the US.

Just to clarify, in case you are not familiar with how ATT works, it is basically like a permission pop-up that every app has to present the user before being able to gain access to their anonymized (in theory) tracking ID to be able to associate that with in-app activity, as well as activity within other apps and services. If a user chooses to deny tracking, the app in question can't properly "know" the user. That is to say "know" them in the ad-targeting sense. Opting out of app tracking does not disable say Facebook or Instagram or any other app's ability to see and potentially use any of the personal data you have shared with them in your profile or any connected authentication service. It just means that the particular app can't, for instance, know that you just spent the last few hours browsing for a new hat online and then present you with ads for hats. Also worth noting is that disabling app tracking does not disable ads. Those will still be there, just less targeted to you, personally.

Not related to iOS specifically but the new Big Sur v11.4 fixed an annoying issue I had on 11.3 with regards to audio 'cracking' when using external headphones. Also since the previous update I could no longer update my watch faces etc. through the watch app on my phone, latest update fixed that as well

Yep was about 915mb on 11 Pro Max.

Anyone updated to WatchOS 7.6? I keep getting the cannot be verified message, I think Apple may have pulled it due to some people losing the Unlock with Apple Watch functionality between 7.6 and 14.7.

I didn’t even realise there was an update until I took the watch off the charger this morning and it went “ding” and showed the update successful message.

>900MB download on the iPhone 12. Quite a chunky update.

Still my youtube premium doesn't do picture in picture and pornhub is buggy.

Well most websites on iOS is buggy, you'd think the guys who pioneered HTML5 would have better support for it.
