ios 4.2

Could someone please clarify a few things. I currently have my first iPhone. I have learnt alot from this forum, however, I have never been through a OS update. My phone is jailbroken. What will I have to do to update to 4.2? What are the procedures? Wil I have to backup my apps first? Will I have to re-jailbreak? Please outline all the steps.

Thanks in advance.

Yep... Just sit tight... Ignore the update messages from iTunes and wait for the full unthered jailbreak.

In essence, the process with OS updates on a jailbroken phone is to remain in your seat while the rest of the world (who have not jailbroken theirs) update through iTunes.

Within a couple of days, and it looks like it might be a couple of hours for 3G and 3GS owners in this case, the jailbreaking community release a IPSW file and a jailbreaking tool like limera1n... You'll need to download both the IPSW file and jailbreak tool and run through the steps to build a custom IPSW file on your machine. Once the IPSW file is built, the jailbreak will run and when that's done it'll put your phone in Recovery mode... You then start up iTunes which will identify the phone in recovery mode and ask you to restore... This is the most important stage... You then NEED to hold the Alt key (I think it's the Shift key on a PC) when you hit the Restore button in iTunes in order to browse to the custom IPSW file you've just built and restore your phone from that custom file as opposed to the firmware released by Apple.

iTunes will do it's restore thing... Activate the phone again and ask you if you want to set up as a new phone of from a backup. You should Sync your phone in iTunes to create a backup before you start the whole process and setting up your phone from the backup is a lot less time consuming than setting it up as a new phone every time.

Once you're done, you'll be running your jailbroken iPhone on the latest iPhone firmware... That is, of course, until the next OS update when you repeat the whole process again...

There are plenty online guides to the step-by-step process you'll need to follow... As always, my best advice is to check out the DevTeam blog at http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ for updates... Cydia and PwnageTool still need to be updated for 4.2.1 but they do say an unthered jailbreak for iPhone 3G and 3GS should be available some time today with an unthered jailbreak for iPhone 4 in a couple of days time.

wow thanks mate, for helping me out again.

Is there any reason why one would update to ios 4.2. I don't have an apple tv, airplay speakers or air play printer... is there some other reason I should do it? I'm finding it hard to justify moving from 4.0 to 4.2 (don't see the need for game centre, so never went to 4.1).

If you have an iPhone 3G, you should definitely update. iOS 4 killed the 3G, it became so sluggish that you could not even answer a phone call.

Have loaded the latest software to my iPad - I see it has changed the use of the screen lock switch. It used to lock the screen, so if you moved the iPad around, then the screen wouldn't follow (useful feature), now it is used as a mute button. Is there any other way to lock the screen now ?

Just to make life easier for some, here are the official URLs for those who don't wanna go looking, I always download from these, then Shift Restore/Update (or Option on a Mac)

I'm on the 4 & thing is faster than my non-smart Nokia, so no reason to waste bandwidth until someone brings out a solution where this airplay thing can be hooked up to my receiver.

The orientation lock is now the same as on the iPhone - you need to double tap the home button and then scroll one more to the left - there is an orientation button/switch there now...

No!!!! I downloaded the update via iTunes and the server did a reset when I was at 202MB done. I'm using Vodacom HSDPA, so there goes half my data bundle. *sniff sniff*

The same happened to me when I was 600MB into downloading Aperture 3.1 (Also VC 3G)
I'll phone my contact at Core Technical and as him for a copy.(Trial Version as I have the KEY)

i see that 4.2 is out for iPad ... is it safe to update ??? my ipad is jailbroke with Limera1n

4.2.1 is pretty good so far. Only gripe I have is that on my iPhone and on my iPad I am now unable to send e-mail from my ***@mac.com e-mail address - only sends from ***@me.com now :(

A few things about 4.2

So I upgraded to 4.2 on the iPad. It's an up and down ride so far.

AirPrint works great with my HP printer. No probs there, and wireless printing has made my wife love me more ;)

All of a sudden my compact flash card reader hooked up to my camera connection kit gives a 'not enough power' message, whereas with 3.2 it worked fine. Looks Like a power limiting feature was built into the iPad's connector.

$@?*!! Airplay doesn't work with my (not the latest) Apple TV! Nor does it seems to work with my oldish Airport Express. Fortunately the Remote app seems to still work with AirTunes. this makes the upgrade rather expensive if I have to get new hardware.

A few apps don't work anymore. Many don't have the AirPrint facility built in. I get the impression many developers are sitting on their hands and not upgrading their apps.

The multi-tasking feature is great when you're doing things like cutting and pasting between apps. And noce to not ha e to start from scratch when you're re-opening some apps.

My work email is on Novell, and all of a sudden I can't open emails in the browser based Novell email client. Tried several ipad browsers, and none work. Obviously a huge problem for me and will just hasten the process of moving completely to Gmail, unless Novell picks up on it.

All in all, not really fireworks and blinking lights. Someone said Apple may have released it under pressure and left out some essentials, and I agree. it feels unfinished.

Assuming you are meaning GroupWise? So you can't get GW WebAccess to work in Safari? I will try this out against our system and see if it works and let you know.

I would agree with you..... feels very unfinished..... but love the folders:-)

I've now had IOS 4.2.1 on my iPad for a couple of days:

1. AirPrint
- Works wonderfully if you have an HP that is ePrint capable or Printopia on a Mac
- Printing photo's from the default photo app only prints to 1/6th of the page with no option to change.
- One can also not print multiple photo's on one page
- Pages, Numbers, Safari ... and other apps with printing options work fine

2. Airplay
- Could not get this working... have no Apple TV.

3. Multitasking
- For the most apps it appears to be "last state" rather than multitasking, which is just fine with me.
- I am yet to find an app that does something while I am busy with something else other than an alternative music player
- It just does not make sense that one would want to calculate the size of the universe on a device such as the iPad
- Its like asking for a racing car that can do off-road... does not make sense.
- But Apple has delivered

Coverflow
- still not in ios 4.2.1 on the iPad

Overall the device seems faster.
