iOS 5 beta users - Your experience so far ...

I am absolutely hating iTunes beta on Windows. I hope they get it stable before release.

The iTunes beta is dangerous ... caused me plenty frustration. When you install the beta over 10.3 it changes the backups you have on your system. After I reverted back to 4.3.3 on my iPad iTunes could not restore my back-ups. When I then un-installed iTunes 10.5 beta and re-installed iTunes 10.3 the back-ups couldn't be restored because the beta version changed it and iTunes 10.3 could not read it. So, lesson learned: copy the full iTunes folder over to another drive before installing iTunes beta. You will have to copy it back if you want to revert to iOS 4.3.3 and/or iTunes 10.3.

I must say I am enjoying the subtle changes to the notification centre. The initial bigger notification before docking it to the list on the lock screen is nice. The future dated calendar entries that are most welcome as well.

I've hit an bug where a ghost icon of one of the apps has been overlayed by a working app and is in a permanent wiggling state. Hard to explain but certainly entertainingly odd. :)

I don't seem to be able to get reminders to notify only once. I've set it to beep once but it seems to still beep twice.

I suspect they have changed the logic (or it's a bug). The initial reminder no longer counts so the number of repeats you set is actually on top of the initial alert.

Iosx 5 beta 3 released, just in case anyone was waiting for it.

How does one get the beta? Googling iOS 5 beta returns some results that scare me out of doing it.

You need to have an apple dev account, register your UDID, then download Itunes 10.5 beta 3 and iOSX 5 beta 3 from the dev portal, and then upgrade. But you will not be able to upgrade unless your phone has been registered and authorised by apple. I have seen websites where you pay a small fee, and they register your UDID on their dev accounts. I dont know how safe it is to do that tho.

Getting an Apple update verification server unavailable error message when trying to install Beta 3.

Anyone else getting this?

Update: Never mind. It's working now. Found the culprit that was blocking HTTP requests.

First impression is that its not at all bad. There is a bit of lag here and there, but overall its ok. I am having some problems syncing my apps though...

New iTunes beta for Windows is way more stable than the previous versions.

Yup, U will need to pay a fee, as said in a previous post rapidblue seem to do it for $5. The only way u can get it free is if u know someone who has an apple dev account and can register ur UDID, otherwise, pay up :)

Question: Did any of you get the "Sim locked" message in a foreign language after upgrading to beta 5? Funny thing is that I updated two iPhone 4's yesterday, and while mine shows the animated welcome messages and the moving world map. the other one simply displayed the menu options without any of the animations. Plus, its "Sim Locked" message was in english...

I've had the SIM locked message in a foreign language as far back as I can remember on iOS when doing a fresh restore, so it's not just version 5.

Yes. In Russian. I've had it since the first time I switched on the phone though i.e. even on iOS 4.

Two days in now. Battery life is not great, but not terrible either. The OS is responsive and smooth. I love the fact that you can control notification per application with several settings at your disposal. Access to notifications from the lock screen is also a bonus. I don't find myself using the notification center much. But then again, I never really used the pull down menu on Android either. My data connection seems to be a bit on the unstable side. While the phone shows that there is 3g signal, some times the data connection simply wont take and I have to switch to airplane mode, or at the worst reboot the phone. I also encountered a problem with my email settings, as my sent emails were not being saved, and as a result had to delete the account and set it up from scratch. iCloud is for not not 100% functional, however I love the idea of my notes, reminders, bookmarks etc syncing to all my other iOS devices. Seamless device switching. Oh, and notification per user settings are also welcome and LONG overdue.

So, while iOS 5 does bring a slew of "new" features to the iPhone I can not help but point out the other companies have been including many of the features in their software for yeas. RIM especially stands out as they offer top-notch contact integration with social media and messaging.

Iosx 5 beta 4 available for download now. You will need to install iTunes 10.5 beta 4.

Enjoy
