iOS 5

Apple's iOS should go "home-button-less". That button should make way for touch and swipe control.

What about motion sensing (ie motion controlled) app swapping? Apps, like games, that use motion overrides motion controlled open app selection.

On that note, I see the new Ice cream Sandwich phones dont have buttons anymore. (well they coming out in July only) but pictures showing no more buttons on the phones for navigation.

I'm not sure I'm too keen on that idea but hopefully they turn on gestures by default.

That could make handling an ipad a bit tricky - ito accidentally activating the touch control (I assume you mean on the bezel). As it is atm you don't have to worry about orientation at all.

I want an easier and quicker way to jump between open apps (not using the home button as much) ... and I want to be able to close open apps by tapping on an "X" or something similar. There should a simple menu that opens by tapping or swiping the screen in some way that allow users to do app control.
Have you activated gestures? You can swipe between apps, bring up the task bar etc.

Thanx Bwana. Exactly what I had in mind. Xcode = 4.5 GB download however. :(

Thanks Bwana. I see there is another way using iTunes Backup Manager. Pity we didn't get this in 4.3 but I'm sure it's going to be in iOS 5 then. Really happy to see Apple is working in that direction. At some point the home button must go.

I actually hope they upgrade the whole mail app. I'm seriously considering buying the iphone 4 - it will slot in perfectly with my ipad/ipod/itunes ecosystem, but I have serious doubts about going from BB's email setup to that of iOS.

Despite all the nice to haves of a larger screen, the great apps etc. I rely heavily on email functionality - things like being able to mark all as read or delete all for instance. Sound petty, but if you have a truck load full of messages to deal with it becomes important. I've mentioned the lack of filtering in a previous post. The iOS solution is really backwards in this regard, an overhaul of the mail app is hopefully on the cards.

SiriS, I also still use my BB Bold 9000 despite having the iPhone 4 because e-mail on the BB just works so damn well. As a text comms device (e-mail, BBM) my Bold with its nice keyboard and BIS just works better. If/when I need more screen (especially for web tasks) and need to use apps I use my iPad. I wish Apple would bring out a device like the new SE Xperia Pro. That will make me ditch my BB. I'm actually very tempted to get the Xperia Pro once it lands here.

I'm holding thumbs for the iOS 5 changes. Very tempting, but the mail app on the ipad has been a disappointment. Not sure how big a priority this is for Apple, but if they want to stay in the game vs. Android they must cater for more users (read: business use). Maybe it is less of an issue because most people use IMAP? I've tried it before, but it was a complete cockup.

What's wrong with the email app on the iPhone?

On the assumption that it is the same as the ipad -

1) no filtering (auto-BCC etc. etc.)
2) no mark all as read functionality
3) no delete all functionality

The first one I concede is maybe not such a big issue for most people, but I need it for the way my different devices and addresses are set up. The last two I would say should be standard functionality. It takes far too long to edit/select/delete, not to mention that you must open each and every mail to mark as read.

I use both BB and ipad's mail apps, the BB's raw functionality ito managing large volumes of email definitely trumps that of the ipad.

Oh another point - the ability to attach files from within the mail app is also lacking.

For me its not so much the functionality within the mail app itself but the ease of doing email on the Berry that matters. The keyboard on my Bold is truly awesome and the BIS allows me to run push e-mailing all the time on multiple accounts without ever worrying about data/cost. On my iPhone and iPad I fetch my e-mail as I'm reluctant to keep a permanent connection going between my device and the mail server. Everything on the Berry is also encrypted.
