iOS 7.04

If you want to install 7.1 on her 4s you can do that to.

Download the required ipsw here.

Then use the shift restore method in iTunes to update your 4s. You will have to put the 4s in DFU mode for this to work...

Thanks sand_man for all the info. I'll see if I can convince wifey
Pleasure. Jailbreaking etc is the easy part. The hard part is convincing the wifey to let you play with her phone. When you connect to the pc and open iTunes it almost always syncs and makes a backup. The time the backup takes to complete and the amount of space it consumes o the C drive depends on how many pics and videos are stored on the phone. If there 20gb worth of pics and vids then that's how much space will be required on the C drive so be careful with that.

That's way I always recommend cutting and pasting those pics and vids before doing the backup.

Easy to do, connect phone, close iTunes if it's open and wants to sync, find camera or portable device in computers root directory, open and cut and paste the folder contents, saving them to a destination other than the C drive. Leave the folders intact!! NB!!!

Once all the pics and vids are safely transferred open iTunes and let is make a backup, a backup I don't recommend you use but one that might save you from divorce should things go pear shape later on...

Did you ever use fakeclockup or accelerate on your jailbroken devices?

It's the most low maintenance performance upgrade one can make. Free piece of software, no additional hardware required, light weight and easy to install, simple in execution but extremely effective.

When you say 7.1 feels substantially faster I wonder if Apple engineers are simply applying the same principles as accelerate IE altering animation speeds?

EDIT: Made a video quick demonstrating how it works on my 4s..

Yes on both accounts (early iOS7 betas included for some a way to adjust animation speeds).

Yet I still believe waiting for 7.1 would be the best approach in this case. Jailbreaking IMO is becoming less relevant these days.

iOS 7 really has spruced things up a bit and with the new look being incorporated into 3rd party apps, things are looking fresher than they have for a longtime.

Still, can't help but think that a little homescreen bling could go a long way to satisfying some of the easily distracted users.

Icon packs for one!! Surely these could be sold on the AppStore and activated in settings>icon packs>mios/boss/noki/elitehd pro/jaku/...

How about a custom carrier label option? Or icon label on/off option? Or animation on/off option?

Take the Springtomize app for jailbreakers for example. A lightweight application that incorporates a plethora of settings for the user to customize the look and feel of his/her iDevice.

Very doable you would agree?

I've been JB'ing since the beginning, but I never found any usefulness with icon packs, custom carrier labels, springtomize, etc. + we're talking Apple and they've never been known to facilitate interface skinning, so no chance there.

Control center has pretty much covered most of my reason for JB, i.e. SBSettings -- yet I'll agree that I wish it was customizable like SBSettings, still I can live without that for now.

What I'd like is for Apple to improve control center to allow customization for not only more Apple features but also for 3rd party features. Plus for notifications panel to be opened for 3rd party widget development, as it is for Weather and stocks.

Overall I think Settings can do with some simplification / regrouping / redesign. iOS7 could also do with some more refinement in the way it looks and works.

Yes like you I'm quite happy with the general trend and the new look of the apps.

My wife's 4S is still on 6.1.3 (10B329) and on Vodacom network. She says that lately a couple of issues are popping up like app force closes, the phone is laggy, apps take long to open, etc.

If I am correct, 7.04 is the latest greatest. From what I've seen there are mixed responses from people who updated.

Who here has a 4S who updated? What version are you on? Any issues on Vodacom network?

Also, if it is not worth while to update, what should we do to get rid of the issues she currently has (Yes, I know "Go Android" is the answer, but let's stick to iOS for now)

Obvious question but have you tried closing some/all Apps?

Many people think restarting their phones is the solution to speeding it up, but this does absolutely nothing as the Apps are simply suspended and carry on after the phone restarts.

iPhone 4S here as well and no problems with 7.0.4. I haven't even bothered to so the "speed tricks" as it's just fine for me.

The one annoyance I do have - is that I will often launch Tapatalk, or even try to unlock the phone - and then start putting in my pin/code too early. There is a split second lag which means my *last* two digits are captured as the *first* two digits of the 4-digit code. I then need to delete them and start again.

Not sure if this happens to iPhone5 users or anyone else? Guess it could be 4S lag-related. Or maybe I'm just too impatient. :)

I don't know. Will check it out when I am back home again

Eventually wifey said it's fine to jb the 4S. And then I saw that only up to 6.1.2 is jb-able. She is on 6.1.3

So now we are either going to wipe and reinstall or go for 7.0.4

Don't know which would be best since wifey doesn't want to lose smses or contacts

I experience the same thing with the PIN number issue on my iPhone 4. Definitely a delay there.

If you wipe and reinstall (ie an iTunes restore) you will HAVE to go to 7.0.4. You won't be able to go to anything less, Apple only allows for installation of the latest firmware on devices.
You could do a full reset on the phone and stay at 6.1.3 - depends on your needs.

Just forfeited jailbreak on my 4s and installed 7.0.4!! Must say it's a lot better than I was expecting!! Really loving the feel of it!!

Must say (and I never thought I would) but for the 1st time in a looooong time I'm not missing jailbreak all that much. Really enjoying iOS 7.
