iOS 8 boasts new features and better graphics

So my single core iPhone 4 has finally reached the end of lifetime. It has served me well with all the updates since iOS 4. Personally, I think iOS 8 has a couple of nice touches and I am looking forward to using it. I am especially pleased with the Quick Type keyboard because my girlfriend says that is the feature she missed most from Android.
 
There are some great features without a doubt...

I'm just unsure about how revolutionary some of it is.

They have an incredible offering now especially if you have more than one Apple device and also other less device specific features like Family Sharing and cheaper iCloud storage etc.

I think they've showed off some incredible things today which all add up to a great experience when combined.

And Android will benefit from those ideas eventually and the cycle will reverse and repeat.

We are all winners at the end of the day as they compete with each other.

This. I cannot foresee ever buying an Apple device, but the competition is good for all. Hopefully M$ can light some more fire under them.

Hrm.. Nah was reading advertisement from telcos there wherein they say it will route thru your wifi.. So cell coverage can be dead? There is significant cost savings especially when roaming overseas btw

Hopefully they can put enough medical info on HealthKit so you can successfully be cloned after a fatal accident.

when I was in the UK last year, got myself a pay as you go from three.co.uk has number for life, free voice minutes and all you can eat data :) made all my calls back to South Africa via Facetime :)

Opening up of Google Voice, and integrating it with Hangouts?
 
Most people ignore the biggest change- the opening of API's up to developers, to allow cross-application sharing. This is huge.

IOS still looking so 90s, playing Andorid copy and paste. With the way they like patent fights you'd think they don't use other people's ideas at all
 
Not surprised to see some here call it an Android ripoff because some of the features have been on Android for a while. But these same folk make no mention of the features that Android doesn't have...

Handoff - start typing a message or a mail on the iPhone and complete it on your Mac or iPad as well as receive and make calls from your other devices as long as they're on the same wifi network as your iPhone.

Automatic storing of photos, videos and albums in iCloud Photo Library to access from any device and not use up device space. (Not sure about the mobile data implications of this if it is automatic)

Instant Hotspot, connect your other devices to your iPhone seamlessly and once internet activity has ceased it automatically disconnects to save battery life.

Health app. No longer will you need different apps for different activities.

Self destruct videos and voice notes in native message app.

Homekit, a Siri activated way of controlling supported devices at home.

iOS 8 is very much a release which is slowly breaking down the iOS sandbox and at the same time merging iOS and OS X in a way that makes sense.

It also looks like iCloud and it's services have received a great deal of priority as to bring it in line with Google services like Google drive. The CloudKit API now also allows developers have their apps sign in to iCloud.

In that case, any apple device remains useless to me. Failure not having basic functionality is the killer for me

Yes, this would be very nice to have, but there are similar things out there for android albeit not as well integrated as this looks to be.

iCloud is still a barrier to most people in SA. Even the people with iPhones and top range Android ones restrict there data usage in some way.

Like SauRonNA said, competition is good. Catching up on some features, innovating on others.

What is the difference between the Photo library and Google+ Pictures? Just set to sync over wifi only. You have to delete the originals on the device separately, but I prefer that. Redundancy always necessary and it is much quicker to copy stacks of pics directly from the phone to an HDD than trying to download them all again from the cloud.

Not really. Google + photo backup works like iCloud photos currently works. It just makes a backup of whatever you take while keeping the photo on the device. What iCloud Photo Library will do is automatically store the originals in iCloud while only leaving lightweight device specific sized copies on the device

No. What happens now is that personal hotspot will first have to be turned on on the device and then a connection is established. Instant Hotspot lets you connect automatically from whatever device you're currently using by making the iPhone/iPad connection available automatically when in range.

Does Google Voice allow you to use your main cellphone number? Or do people need to call you on a Google Voice specific number much like Skype as I suspect?

I've had people telling me this morning that you can do this on PC etc for years now. But when I enquire it turns out there's a PBX or server involved or it's just plain forwarding of calls, which means it's not the same thing at all.

Changes look cool and I look forward to saying to some of my mates "See, this is what I have been using all these years" and bring out my Android device :). My iPad is going to love a lot of these features.

I think you will find that a lot of the "hate" is that Apple always labels its "new" stuff as "revolutionary" and "never before seen" so its only natural for the other side to point out that someone else has done it. Plus Apple did not help its case with its (in some areas) stupid lawsuits.
