So betas are necessarily slow and unresponsive as opposed to having occasional bugs? Apple has had 9 main versions to get the speed thing right on supposedly superior hardware.

Yup, IOS betas are quite bad. Battery can go from 97% to 5% in 2 hours on a 5S with this beta.

Not all iOS versions are the same for each device, regardless of whether you think you have the latest. So your 4 year old device won't be the latest and greatest iOS and have the same features as the guy sitting next to you. Worse still, you have no idea at this point what you have or don't have

I've got a 5 year old Samsung running Android 2.3 at home and can't be upgraded. But using the Apple way, I'll just flash it with a highly cut down and featureless Android 5 skin - just to show you that it does and me feel better that I'm still supported

I think you missing the point.. the whole 'latest OS' push allows developers to develop code & support one or max two OS base which cuts down on support costs but it's the developers prerogative to ensure that the features they want to exploit are capable with the device availability they chose and do device restrictions where needed(i think u can chose this still for apps). That support is tied in with the App Store which in iOS controls the software on your device so a device which falls off the support wagon loses 3rd party software support fast! It also ensures critical OS security changes are implemented where needed as soon as possible.. Windows Xp anyone ;) ? From that point of view, iOS has been remarkable and OSX is heading the same way :)

In the end though, device functionality is what drives handset purchases and you see Apple often delaying pushing some hardware features simply to have a compelling device release.. but in terms of OS features which are not hardware limited, the support is usually only cut by processing overhead exceeding device.

You see this kind of support hitting Apple ironically in Tablets where sales have suffered because unlike phones, people have found that tablets can be kept for 3-5 yrs before needing to update it and even then, its not necessarily needed. i reckon, aside from the Air & Air 2 or Mini range, the only next surge they will have is with the anticipated larger iPad.
