Not all iOS versions are the same for each device, regardless of whether you think you have the latest. So your 4 year old device won't be the latest and greatest iOS and have the same features as the guy sitting next to you.

Worse still, you have no idea at this point what you have or don't have

Of course you can't get everything. Like he will also not get the touch id, because his hardware isn't capable of doing it. But he still gets all the features his device is capable of doing. Like how my S3 can get lollipop but I can't use all the things on there because it is not compatible with my enxynos chipset. That is not the operating systems fault. Why would you even compile something in if you know it won't work. I still have lollipop on my S3 though it can't do everything lollipop promises to do.

Honest question; What is the point having the latest iOS if their legacy devices don't support all the features?

Majority of the features are supported. Honestly, this is the first time I've ever heard that I don't have all the features. Thus, I haven't missed anything. And thus this is a non-issue.

The major components still get updated. Security fixes still get applied and the latest apps still work.

Non of which is true for a 2+ year old Android.

Well since it is done live I assume they couldn't get the the appropriate quality with the resources available. I know there was apps in the store that you could download but they were prone to crash. So I think it is a hardware limitation. Don't have an ipad 2 any more so won't be able to tell you.

From reading threads on here, one thinks that Apple the best device ever ; everything works perfectly and they create this aurora around Apple products making the owner think they're elite and better than the rest. I sadly fell for it, but quickly learnt the truth - and happily on Android phone/tablet.

Everything doesn't work perfectly, and the apps does crash as well. And if you want your phone/tablet to do something in particular that is not really mainstream or what apple considers to be mainstream then it isn't for you. I have had lots of issues with my Apple products through the years, wasn't really impressed with the iPad 2 (more iOS and the restrictions imposed), but as time went by they fixed all the issues I had with it (the data limit being the biggest issue for me, remember that ridiculous cap?). I don't have any issues with the restrictions they impose currently though.

I did - but I bought a second iPad too.

I had an ATV3, iPod and used iTunes as well. I even considered an iPhone :/

But in all honesty, I found the Android the better choice for me. As you say, it depends on the person - and Android has come along way of the crashing 2.3.3 they used to run. I have a Sony Xperia phone/tablet on 5.0.x and love it

I think it's important to remember that Apple create software for a set device. Android is open to whoever wants to make a phone to use it. You can't expect Google to support every phone someone wants to release with the latest Android Kernel. The different hardware configurations would make this a mini nightmare to get right with 100% of people happy

As for this statement. If we compare the Nexus line to the iPhone (slightly more fair taking the above into consideration) The Nexus 4 was released in 2012 and is currently running Android 5 and will support Android 6. My Nexus 5 which was released in 2013 is currently running Android M Developer Preview.

Based on iOS8 Compatible devices they support from the 4s. It's important to note that just because an iPhone 4s can run iOS8, doesn't mean it can run it well (All of my friends with 4S's either had to find a way to rollback or were essentially forced to upgrade because the experience was so bad)

Who cares between these flagship devices? Both super smooth. Future cellphones and chipsets will just get faster and I highly doubt that the apps and user interface will place any strain on it. I think lightning fast cellphones will soon be the norm.

If anything, Google/MS/Samsung need to catch up with Apple when it comes to quality and support.

Seems Google knows what it's about. If only other manufacturers would support their devices so long so it doesn't become necessary to purchase new hardware.
