Ok, well back to the static IP thing then:

Jongi is there any particular reason why you need to use a static IP address [other than wanting to give WBS an extra R200 per month]?

Let me put it this way, do you experience frequent disconnects with your iBurst? If yes, then it defeats the purpose of using a static IP address which you probably need for some hosting purpose, if no, then just use DynDNS instead and save yourself R200 per month...

The only reason I can think of, is hosting & reverse DNS for SPF...?

It was to do with settings one of the technicians gave me with respect to optimnising my connection. I have no particular need for a static IP. When i get back home tonight I hope to be able to get hold of one of them and have them run me through the steps again when I am in front of my computer and have them explain what each step is for.

Can I assume that most people leave it at a dynamic IP each time they log on?

Jongi .. I must comment and say that I think the helpdesk technie spoke absolute *** to you ....

The only "fixed" IP's the helpdesk would hand out at the moment is to prevent the infamous "limited or no connectivity" issue in windows xp. It would do NOTHING to "optimize" a connection.

While WBS HAS static IP addresses available it is not yet a "launched" service. I've now been using one for 1 week. Not too much different except for a static ip ;-)

Here's another scary ksedpleh possibility - perhaps they were trying to instruct Jongi in the ways of the rfScan... just imagine how that could go wrong with non-geeky types...

The IP was the one that you access the UTD with if I am not mistaken

If you're getting a lot (sometimes 10+ per hour) of disconnections like I am in Northcliff, a static IP may well enable my TCP connections to survive the reset, which would make life oh so much more livable right now. My UDP-based Cisco VPN connections would also stand a chance that way.

About the only thing that might kill this is if iBurst's "host unreachable" ICMPs during the break before my router re-establishes PPPoE stop the remote peer. But I'd like to take my chances with that - right now any download that takes more than a couple of minutes has to be done at work. You'd be surprised how many apps aren't coded to cope with connections dying underneath them like that , in bulk.

So, what does it take for me to score myself a static address?

If you are refering to the one GRES gave I don't know. But the helpdesk guy gave me the same IP as that GRES PM'd me.

Ok Jongi, so was it 192.168.0.10?

If so, then we have been going round in circles in this thread...

Jongi, do you have your iBurst [UTD?] attached to a Windoze XP machine? Did you call the WBS tsruBi ksedpleh to find a solution to a "Limited or no connectivity" error message that Windoze XP gives?

If not, was it purely about speed/signal issues that caused you to call the WBS tsruBi ksedpleh?

192.168.250.10 (The one in the PM that GRES sent me)

I called about speed/signal issues. And they gave me that IP to use. Plus DNS addresses (primary and alternate). Also changes that I should make using DrTCP
