Hi,

When I log on to MTN via my 3g and try downloading something from rapidshare or the like, I get an message stating that my IP is already downloading. Is the reason I share a proxy od the like with someone...everyone? Or should my IP be unique?

Tx

Got this off systemshock:

"This issue with the Cellular providers is that their internet APN sits on a private IP range - this means you go out gateways from their APN to the internet."

So i think the IP of the gateway is picked up by RS and then seen as a dupe

i got those errors before but i did download a patch from rapidshare before and it worked i was amazed, was the first time something from rapidhshare downloaded normally it just wont :(

It happens with Telkom ISP as well. Oddly enough it's different with AXXESS vouchers.

Go into your browser settings on your PC & set the proxy to 196.11.240.251 port 8080 - these are the auto-installed settings on my Touch Pro's MTN Internet link. Transferred them to the PC & RapidShare hasn't been an issue since...

Due to the cost and limited supply of public IP's, most ISP's will perform address translation for their subscribers - so you get a private address (for MTN subscribers, this will be a 172.2x.x.x IP address - you can get this IP from running ipconfig in a command prompt) but you will get NAT'd (or PAT'd depending on your provider) to a single (or several) public IP's for access to the interweb.
Which basically means that there will be quite a few subscribers (often in the hundreds) on the net effectively using the same IP address as you. You can get your own public IP but that will cost you extra and as far as I'm aware, only VC offers that right now.

Just for the record, Vodacom does not charge anything extra for a public IP. Any data connection on the Vodacom network gets a public, routable IP by default.

For all APN's? With the rapid growth of data in this country, that can't be a very sustainable model, surely?

Found this through Google Search, so I might as well ask the question here.

Is it possible to get a public IP from MTN?

If so, then how does one get it?

Thanks :)
Nick

My MTN 3G Sim always provides me with a public IP address in the 41.*.*.* range. I've never been provisioned with a private IP address with MTN, so not sure why others would have.

Thanks deweyzeph,

May I ask have you ever tried to access that IP address from another machine via the internet?

Because I also have a 41 address and can ping it from another machine on different network but the trying to access it via browser gives a gateway error.

I phoned MTN 1555 and they say to use mtnvpn APN to get it working.

Its only available to contract customers.

Going to test in next hour to see if its working but if anyone has experiences of it working or not, please let me know

Thanks
Nick

No, MTN and Vodacom both block incoming connections on their "internet" apn's. Vodacom has an apn called "unrestricted" which it will provision to both prepaid and contract customers. MTN I'm not so sure of.

Thanks deweyzeph,

I have contacted both MTN and Vodacom again and here it the story:

MTN: you have to be provisioned to use mtnvpn and you can do this by calling 1555. Yes, its for contract customers only.

Vodacom: you can get the "unrestricted" APN which has public ip, no port blocking (as you said) and you must also get provisioned. You have to fill out a form and fax/email it through to them.

So that is the current status, I am doing both network and shall report back if its a success or not.

At the end of the day, this information can then appear in Google if someone searches for it as well :)
