So i've been slowly but surely buffing the security at home and recently acquired a full 360deg controllable wireless IP cam that i want to mount in my living room, thus being able to see the front door, down the halls and the sliding door to the patio. After the initial excitement about my purchase faded i started thinking about network security and what i can do to keep prying eyes out there from accessing it, while still having me be able to log into it remotely over the web with good hopes that im secure. Will be the first time i attempt something like this so, so far i have my modem hardware firewall on, and all the basic things like Titan Internet Security installed, etc. My modem is in the living room also and it will be connecting over wireless. Going to install the software and whatnot later this afternoon - dont know exactly how it will work yet. Any recommendations on anything else i could do to make it secure to me only?

Thanks

Don't simply forward a port through your firewall to the camera. This exposes your camera to attack from the internet. Some cameras have had vulnerabilities where anyone can access the video stream, even without a password. And if yours is not one of those, there is still a possibility that the password may be guessed.

Investigate whether your router will allow you to establish a VPN connection to it, and then connect to your camera via the VPN.

Also look into ways of recording your video stream. It doesn't help to have the camera watching the guys stealing your stuff, but nobody watching the camera.

Thx Rogan, good suggestions. Instead of having a dedicated recorder i was thinking of maybe looking into some software for the PC to do that (since its almost never turned off) - preferably with some sort of auto-resume recording for when the power goes.

I use blue iris software it works well for me . This software seems to cover the widest range of IP cams and it is stable with periodic updates. I have 3 IP cams running on this software and they are a mixture of cams.
