Hi Guys,

I would like some advice to buying an IP Camera solution.
By that I mean I want to install a camera at home(baby's room etc) and somehow logon via internet to see what is going on from work.

I have a decent 512k solution. Is this possible to do?
Also if possible what would I need to buy?

All advice much appreciated.

Yes, its very much possible and there is lots of ways to do it.

I think the rest of the thread needs to be guided by what your budget is.

IP cameras can start from R1700 to R1900. You also get GSM cameras these days which saves even more on effort as its just plug and play.

The camera (if you dont want recording) is the only thing you need as you would just use your standard ADSL router to do port forwarding to the camera.

Thanks Nic.........
Do you know of any shops that stock these products?
Not that I have an unlimited budget but I am prepared to spend whatit takes to get a decent solution.

do yoursel a favour and DONT go for the chepies that network co's use like: Level One, D-link etc

Considering its for a baby room and you will be monitoring over the net it would be nice to go for a cam with H.264 compression for best over the net performance. Check out the Axis M1031W. If youve got Wifi at home you'll just need to give the cam power. And the really nice thing is that it has a two way audio feature so you can listen in and talk through to it or have precorded messages play. It even has a bright LED light that can be activated on trigger or manually. If your checking up on the nanny you can get it to email you a pic every time she has gone near the cradle (via zone motion detection event trigger)

Axis also has a fairly easy to to use DNS setup for your ADSL viewing.

S4S has good prices: check out http://www.s4s.co.za/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=S4S0300002

forgive my ignorance but isn't it better to buy 4 channel DVR which supports dyndns, that way you have future expansion and buy normal camera. Cost should be about the same.

I have installed systems with DVR recorder that makes picture available on Internet. The camera can be a R700 bullet camera. Needs to be cabled back but that is easy. The Digital Recorder that cost R5K are good. Even the cheap systems sold at Builders ware house give a clear picture and come with all the software for over net viewing. They even function as a burglar alarm if you want. They have outputs that can connect to your burglar alarm .

The R700 cameras switch over to black& W when there is no visible light and they auto switch on the Infra red LED. They are fine for indoor and up to 10Meter outdoor. If you need better outdoor coverage then you must pay more. My experience has been that even the no name cameras have a sony chip and are fine.

Camera systems have become so easy to do that any one who can plug in a TV or computer can do the installation.

Axis IP cams for sale on www.ipcams.co.za also
Axis 211A Outeniqua Choo Tjoe
Axis M7001 video encoder with R800 I/R Eagle Owl

Hi Mamajyot, Hi profpanda,

Regarding GSM cameras, you can get them from us at RedZebra CCTV. We have offices in Joburg and Cape Town and can be reached at 0110836005

We have various models but the GSM 101 for example, retails for is R3500 and is a rugged camera with external contacts, recording to SD card support (with remote playback) and battery backup, to name some of the features.

We also have day network wireless cameras for R1400 and day-night IR cameras for R1500. These are heavy duty cameras and offer great value.

All the cameras also fully integrated with RedZebra CCTV monitoring software.

For you Mamajyot, you can then get a GSM camera or Network Camera and it then it records on alarm and/or motion to your RedZebra CCTV gallery which you can then see from anywhere, from any web browser or mobile phone. You can see a demo at www.redzebracctv.co.za/self

You can imagine how cost affective this is in comparison to PC-based DVR.

We also just launched live view which enables you to remotely view the live video feed from the camera for when you want to just check-up or to monitor a current alarm situation.

Please give us a call if you have any questions or please post here to carry on the discussion :)

Best Regards,
Nick

Hi

I have an excellent IP Camera. My wife insisted on getting a camera to monitor our nanny and since then we have kitted out our entire home with Foscam IP cameras. We have found the cameras to be of excellent quality, they offer assistance for setting up and aren't badly priced either! You can buy them online locally and they ship to you.
