Looking to install 5 IP cameras some time this year, and I have a few questions for anyone that has any experience greater than me (which would include having briefly glanced at a box containing an IP camera).

If it helps, I'm looking to get the Intellinet IP camera from Esquire. The only reason I chose 'em is because I have an account there.

As I understand it, the camera plugs directly into the router/switch, and I install software on my pc to view/record - no DVR needed. So, do the cameras come with their own software for viewing/recording? If not, what software (for a windoze box) would I need? I know of zonefinder for linux but its been years since I last used redhat.

My plan would be to build an el'cheapie pc (sans monitor) to run the software 24/7 and record the video feed, and stick it in the roof (for data security), then remote view the cameras from any other pc in the house. How would I extend this functionality to automatically distribute the signal to all the TVs? I assume I would need a TV card with enough TV out ports, and just run the cable through the roof?

If I set the cameras to record a rolling period for 24 hours, then how much data would I require for this purpose? Would a 500gig HDD be enough? I assume it works the other way round though i.e. your storage capacity determines for how long the cameras are able to record for.

im ordering 4 wireless ip cameras from brickom which carry a 2 year guarantee , they work with wimax and are brilliant

Looks like the cameras come with software, you can download it from the Intellinet website if it doesn't come with it. The website says "no serial number needed anymore" which suggests it is now free.

500G should be suitable for 24 hours depending on the quality you set for the recording. Full 1080 HD might be a little big. Distributing to TV might be interesting, composite video can be spread to multiple monitors with a single coax cable with T-pieces. HDMI would be more difficult, you do get HDMI splitters that can duplicate screens.

I toyed with the idea a while back but never actually tried it. I wanted to use Zoneminder and XBMC using this addon

I would also consider offsite backups incase the server got stolen.

i bought 4 cheapie wifi cameras (450 each). hooked them to my wireless router and I record to my hp microserver. installed software on the microserver (blue iris). tinycam for android and ip super camera client for ios.

all works quite well from outside of the house as well (over 3g) etc.
