iPad 1 battery life

Does anyone know how the charging cycle on ipad 1 works? How many charging cycles is the design life? As the ipad ages, do i need to charge it more frequently due to the discharge rate increasing over time...just wanna know when would be a good time to upgrade...not gonna do the stupid yearly thing.

As per Apple
A properly maintained iPad battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 1000 full charge and discharge cycles

Either way this should long outlive the usefulness of the device.
My iPhone 3G as example was taken over by a friend of mine as is still going strong.

What this means for you is that you can easily choose to upgrade every 3rd or 4th year which is typically well within the timelines that Apple provides software upgrades.
