The point I was making which you missed is that the Android market is fragmented -- which is what really irritates me about owning a tab.

I suppose - but I can't say that it has ever bothered me - and I have 2.3.3 (with an update waiting) and 3.2 devices.

I just want stuff that works, and works well, and both of these do that.

So I have no desire for devices that are hardware (lack of interfaces and slots) and software (iTunes) constrained. All thanks to SJ, who has succeeded in making me run away from Apple as fast as I can.

I find your comment strange; it appears the reason you ran away from Apple was as a result of issues with a software upgrade (re itunes).
In contrast the reason why I'm less than enthralled with Android is for the lack of upgrades.

Hope this doesn't inadvertently imply vendors should stop upgrading?

I'm sure this has been covered somewhere in this thread...

But does the iPad allow playback of different video and audio formats? Flac, MKVs, etc?

Apple's standard video player does not support this; compatible format are listed on their website.

Btw There are however a number of apps in the app store that support the custom formats; divx, flac, mkv, etc.

Another alternative is to JB your device and install VLC (VLC is not available in the app store as the developers of this product believe that listing it on a commercial app store would violate their license terms -- stupid argument IMO re the cydia JB store is also commercial?)

Funny thing is I got it when it was in the iTS (before the developer pulled it) and I really don't use it. AirVideo does a great job converting, as well as streaming of course.

Samsung with google are releasing a single device supporting ics; what should really be happening is that google gets the hardware vendors to work in parallel to jointly release ics on all compatible devices as happens in the iOS world. That my point about apple having a foot up on android; hope that makes sense.
Each platform has its merits, but Android sucks in this regard.

I don't really think Apple has a foot up on android there, because the fragmentation thing really is blown out of proportion. I have used every android from 2.1 upwards, with the exception of ICS and all my things run without it knowing about which version is being used. I am sure there are some apps that will suffer though.

Also getting my iPad soon, really excited to see you it compares to android. I don't think I will be able to stick to just one OS in either case. I like gadgets way to much.

Do these apps do it properly though?

My main reason for using a tablet (and why I had the Galaxy Tab) is
1.) Watching videos (while travelling)
2.) Browsing the net (3G) - not big on internet video sites such as youtube, so flash isn't important atm.
3.) Being able to download video's from the net and watch them on the device - see 1. This doesn't happen often - but if I'm stuck outcome where and bored, I don't mind downloading a 350MB and watching it.
4.) Email.
5.) Occasional game

Can the iPad do this properly? Highlighted most important.

I think the iPad is more than capable to do all of your points and more.

I use AcePlayer. I setup UPNP Media Sharing on my PC, and I'm able to stream all my movies and series to my iDevices.
It has a very convenient Download button next to each video. So if you're going to go away, just quickly go into the App, look for something that you want to watch, be it 1 or 10 movies, and download them to your device. Then you can use the app's local media browser to watch them. Most simplistic thing that I've found so far. Very Convenient. Even handles 720p streaming over my wireless network without any troubles.

How long does the download take?

And are there any work arounds to getting flash up and running?

Lastly, how is browsing on an iPad in comparison to a PC?

Are you referring to iOS 5? I just downloaded it from here after getting itunes errors -

Note: use a download manager

I have no idea, but it's never been a problem. Where do you expect to need flash capability?

Lastly, how is browsing on an iPad in comparison to a PC?

Well, just different. Nothing beats lying on your back, browsing, pinch zooming and scrolling. :p

I mean download a video from PC to iPad over wireless (AcePlayer)

Thanks for the other responses :p So far - don't need flash capability...but who knows?

I am considering getting a tablet soon. May just wait for the next iPad. The only thing that dissapoints me is the lack of flash.

Although apple say that there is an app for youtube, I noticed one major thing when browsing on my ipod touch.

Although you can search for and play videos, the youtube app on the iPod does not list all videos on youtube.

For example, most people watch music videos which appear on the artists official VEVO page.

These particular videos are not viewable on an iphone/ipod touch.

Although some videos are listed, you cannot play them due to some formatting issue.

This is the one issue which really has preventing me from buying the iPad2.

The device is really pricey, but for me, a person who uses youtube alot, its really dissapointing.

If you view sites like blogs which have embedded videos etc, some of them may not play.

Try m.youtube.com

Tried that. When comparing it with a youtube search on pc or flash browser on another tablet, some videos are still not returned in the search results.

Apple somehow filters out the ones which are not compatible.

YouTube.

Lol...Was actually supposed to say Apple devices.

But, honestly..... Its a bit dissapointing. I usually do a lot of browsing through my ipod touch. Its kind of annoying to go to my pc if i really want to watch a music video or something.
