iPad 2 here on Friday

These prices don't look very competitive to me. Here's a chart comparing the prices to the US prices:

Model, US Price, US RETAIL Price in Rands, Core Group Retail Price, Difference, Percentage Higher than US Price
16GB $499.00 R 3 319.35 R 4 399.00 R 1 079.65 32.5%
32GB $599.00 R 3 984.55 R 5 399.00 R 1 414.45 35.5%
64GB $699.00 R 4 649.75 R 6 399.00 R 1 749.25 37.6%
16GB+3G $629.00 R 4 184.11 R 5 599.00 R 1 414.89 33.8%
32GB+3G $729.00 R 4 849.31 R 6 599.00 R 1 749.69 36.1%
64GB+3G $829.00 R 5 514.51 R 7 599.00 R 2 084.49 37.8%

At the high end, that's almost 40% higher. MyBB - "competitive"? Really? That looks like about the same markup Core Group have always charged.

Keep in mind Core Group pay LESS than the US retail prices.

Please remember also that those dollar prices are not what you pay in the US anyway. Almost every state and possibly city adds Sales Tax. I just paid an extra $218 on a $1999 computer there ... So please compare apples with apples (so to speak). If you add 14% to those US dollar prices you see that the differential is maybe not as high as you think. If you take out the VAT then the difference is approx 18% - 23% which I don't think is unreasonable.

Also bear in mind that there is a middleman involved, not to mention higher freight charges, and you start to see why the prices are higher. In addition, you get local warranty and support.

If you feel it's too expensive, then don't buy it. If no-one buys it then the prices will come down, right? I doubt that, more likely we'll stop getting all the latest gadgets - then you'll have to buy grey imports - at higher prices anyway - and no local support.

Bummer I need to go to Singapore in September, and it is R2000 cheaper, buy it local NOT!!!!

Initially i was all systems go to buy one, was going to get one overseas. Now i dunno, even though the price is great and right on my door step.

I have a netbook, laptop and cellphone (and 2 3G data cards, one for work, one personal) - do i really need an iPad?

+1

Was actually honestly asking. I really don't know.

Dont see how it will fit in with the rest of my stuff. If i didnt have the netbook, it probably would have been an definite yes to getting one.

Agree. What can an Ipad do that a pocket friendly Iphone can't.

Is the Cell C Usb Data Speedstick Compatible with the new Ipad2 ?

The IPAD 2 does not have a generic USB port. The best you could probably do is to allow access to 3G by sharing the speedstick through a wireless router that supports USB devices.

So basically the iPad needs to stay fixed at one location if you want to browse unless you don't mind carrying your router around with you.

Does Cresta Have?

I'll be in cresta tomorrow morning to get mine

Provided HQ signs this off (albeit she is hoping for winter clothes), I hope to be there tomorrow morning as well.

Has anyone actually checked to see if Cresta Incredible Connection has stock?

Or you could put the simcard IN the iPad and have it with you wherever you go.

Or you get a 3G ipad. Or you get a data bundle on your phone that supports hotspots (android). Or you get a myfi to carry around.

Great news! :D

Any idea if there is going to be a 12AM launch party or how to get hold of one on the launch day? Is there a waiting list or is it first come first serve?

Any info would be appreciated.

No, I Phoned them, the are only allowed to start selling it at 9AM tomorrow morning, and they don't take pre-orders :(
