iPad 2 here on Friday

My concern is that there are probably only a handful of these that have been brought in by Core to try and save face in the midst of all the grey imports. But then I am known to be very cynical...

I'm going to the UK next week so if I upgrade I'll probably get it there and claim the VAT back when I leave. :)

Just a tip - Don't buy from online Apple Store then as you won't be able to claim VAT back. If you can also try and call up a store near where you will be (StormFront or Phones4u or something) that will be able to keep one on hold for you. I suspect there might still be shortages. Or an official Apple Retail store

I've had iPad 1 for a while and iPad 2 for 1 month so can add a few points: There are two types of smart covers - leather and polyurethane. Leather ones are £59 and polyurethane £35. So you can work out approx what they'll go for here. As mentioned in a previous post cell c sell the Huawei D105 router for R599 and is a good fast router. Another option is buy a Vodacom prepaid micro sim. Can buy standard recharge vouchers. As you can't dial them in on iPad Vodacom has a free app called Vodacom recharge. You can type in your recharge voucher in the app and it automatically recharges your iPad account. Can then buy data bundles. Istore has an 8ta promotion. Get the sim for free I think and can buy bundles instore. 1gb is R160 and 3Gb is R299. 8ta has an east to use website to top up your iPad with standard recharge vouchers. Any iPhone 4 sim will work in the iPad as both are microsims.

We don't live in the US. So I think compared to London our prices are good. I queued for three hours down Regent Street to get mine. Apart from online orders UK is totally sold out at the moment. So if you're going there you probably won't get. I have friends there who keep trying and there is no stock.

I went to London for two months and left my notebook and netbook behind. Only took my iPad 1. Ended up coming home with two iPads (1 & 2). But my point is for those asking what you do with it - I loaded every CD I have onto it and used it like a stereo in my hotel. Internal speaker is fine for that. I checked facebook etc. I emailed friends. I booked trains. I booked theatre tickets. I checked out what to do in other cities I went to visit. I watched YouTube. Even after two months I didn't even miss my PC. Did everything I needed on my iPad. With a ten hour battery life its a great device.

Yes I'm an Apple fan and biased. And yes I regard myself a bit of an iPad know it all. Deal with it. ;)

^ umm just wanted to add its polyurethane not polyester...lol

And leather is £59

That's what I said. :)

As an add on - even if SA is a few hundred more at least the device is supported here. And that should be worth a bit extra.

+1

Bottom-line, we are the southernmost point of a largely irrelevant continent economy sophisticated electronics wise. And prices are comparable to the 1st world juggernauts. Hats off I say.

I'm awake and getting ready to go to buy mine! Anyone else?

Still not sure whether to get it, wait for price drops, get an iPad 1 or just keep my iPhone 4 *confused*

Edit : decided. Going to sell iPhone 4. Get iPod touch and iPad 2 :D

Edit: got my iPad 2.

I just got back from the Gateway. When I arrived there there was a MAJOR queue outside the iStore, so I toodled off down to Incredible Connection and whilst there was a few more people there, I managed to get my black 16GB Wi-Fi iPad (but no black smart covers). Wheeeeee!!!

If you aren't already at an outlet you're going to be disappointed. IC Gateway was sold out of 3G iPad2 by 9.15am. I walked past the iStore on my way back to the car and the queue was longer! They were only letting people in one at a time. It's going to be a long day for those dudes...

Also just got back from Gateway, they managed to find the other black smartcovers, poor guys at Istore still queuing. They only letting one in at a time.
Picked up a 64gb 3g model black
Dion wired still have

Goodluck everybody.

I found a black leather smart cover at IC but it was like R799, so I decided I can wait for one of those. Actually, I am not sure I like them. I think I will likely get a sleeve for mine.

Well we are just about on par with UK pricing so not as bad as before!

UK VAT is 20%, ours is 14%, so actually that's at least 6% more expensive than UK. And UK is one of the most expensive countries to get Apple products, so it's not actually a fantastic country to benchmark against, pricewise.

Why go through all the trouble?

Noob question but can I just stick my iPhone sim card (vodacom topup contract) into an iPad and voilà?

The iPhone/iPad ever since I think firmware version 4.1 has a feature called "Personal Hotspot".

Go into Settings, and it should be somewhere underneath "WLAN" or "Wifi" etc etc.

Let me know if you don't come right :D

The iPad does not have a personal hotspot feature.

My Bad...

The iPad does not have a personal hotspot feature.

You're right.

Doesn't matter in this instance however - the iPhone has the feature - and he can teather his iPhones data to the iPad.

All it does is make the iPhone a walking wifi hotspot - much like how the Blackberry Playbook Wifi only version is going to bounce of your phone's BIS plan. :o
