So I tried to pair my iPad with my car's radio (the standard VW Vivo radio) and, while there was no problem pairing it, the music doesn't sound very good. It's loud enough, but the sound is echo-y, like listening to it in a tunnel.

I'm on iOS 5.0.1, and when I pair my Nokia 5800, the sound is perfect, so it's not the radio. I tried with my wife's Sony Ericsson, which also sounds perfect. Google shows a lot of people have echoing while using the handsfree BT on iPhones, but I find nothing about playing music.

Anyone else have this problem?

I have an after market DVD player in my car with some aftermarket sound and have been pairing my iPhone 4 and iPad 2 for a while now with no issues, we found that apple devices had superior sound quality to Blackberry's and Nokia's. I'd suggest trying an iPhone to see how it sounds, as it could be Apple and VW arn't getting along. Also make sure iTunes isn't reducing the bitrate of your songs when syncing.

The reduction in bitrate isn't apparent when using the standard iPad headphones but as soon as you move to something like Beats or car audio this plays a big role on the overall experience.

Wierd. I detest low bitrate audio, so as a result I don't have any low bitrate mp3's. I tried exactly the same songs on all 3 devices and it's only the iPad that has that wierd sound.

It's not impossible that the two don't like eachother, although when I try our old 2nd gen iPod nano through USB the radio shows "ipod", and a VW logo displays on the iPod.

Oh well, I'll definately try an iPhone if I get my hands on one. I'll just have to live with the auxillary cable for now...
