So, after getting a new iPad I decided to wipe my old iPad 2 and give it to my dad. Once I had done the usual "reset to factory settings, wipe all data", the iPad resets, I watch the logo come up, choose language, choose region, connect to wifi, wait for activation.............and boom. REPLACEMENT NEEDED.

The beautiful error that states "This iPad is not able to complete the activation process and needs to be replaced. Please visit your nearest Apple Store or Authorized provider for more information."

After a few hours of trawling forums, and trying all the fixes, I give up and take it to an iStore. They do everything I tried and then end up saying "this is a paperweight now. We can't fix it. You can buy a new one for R4000. That's all you can do." So I ask they guy does this have anything to do with the fact that Apple isn't producing iPad2's or a bug of 7.1.1 (as stated in the forums). He says that "maybe Apple just want you to be a new one. This one's old anyways." Apparently it is a hardware fault and cannot be repaired. It worked 3 hours before that, but ok fine, sadness abounds.

If anyone has any ideas around this, iFix also had no clue, drop me a message? Other than that I thought I would just share my misery with everyone else :(

Google harder, I reckon.
If it still turns on, it must be fixable. Surely?
Does it have to be non-bricked to be jailbroken and Cydia installed?

Have you tried a DFU mode restore? You will need to download the ipsw file your device requires.

From what I can understand the device is fine and the issue resides with Apple's servers and the verification process.

EDIT: Is your iPad 3G cellular?
Are you attempting the activation via cellular connection or wifi?

Hi there - had same problem with iPhone 5 that I gave to my brother. We wiped it with "Restore to factory settings" and after reboot and trying to complete activation it failed.

The iPhone was connected to a fully working WiFi network, so I found it very strange. But, I switched it off, inserted a working sim card, switched on again and the activation completed without any issues. I'm sure you just need to insert a sim temporarily for activation to complete once-off.

+1 Had this same problem when doing a friends phone, put in my sim to activate the thing and it worked after that

OP try putting in a SIM if its the Cellular version, else try what Sand_Man said, that should work in theory

It is a 3G cellular one, and I did try the restore and activation with a working sim card, still no joy.

I have also tried a DFU mode restore, but alas no joy.

Pretty much, if there was a fix on the net, I tried it. Short of summoning the spirit of Jobs to come and voodoo the device itself I'm at a loss :/

Have you tried calling 0800444426, then dialing 1, and explaining to the Apple Agent?

Have you tried not buying an apple device?:D

I saw this post on apple's discussions…

I can now say that my problem has now been resolved. Two of my iPads had the 'Replacement Needed' error and it is now fixed.

Issue: A whole batch of serial numbers went missing in Apple's database, causing your iPad to not be recognised by Apple's activation servers (no joke)

Only solution: You have to ring AppleCare in your respected country and they should escalate your issue to iOS Engineers.

My iPads were 500 days out of warranty and they still managed to fix it. If you have any further questions, post a comment and I'll try to get back to you.

You might want to load up skype and call Apple in the UK? Core is a joke, but we all know that.

Core proved to be useless, I'm going to try calling Apple in the States (I had to do this previously before for a locked iPhone)

The UK is also good and they're closer to our time zone. :)
