iPad Mini price tag defended by Apple

Well, time will tell. They must have done their homework before arriving at that price.

This is the only case I've ever heard of Apple overpricing their products.

The iPad Mini, with its A5 CPU and 1024 x 768 resolution, is simply overpriced at $330. No other way around it.

Normally I think Apple products are quite reasonably priced for what they are - ie the iPad is reasonably priced compared to Android alternatives. But in this case, no way. Too much.

They charge so much because they know people will buy it because of the Apple logo.

An iSheep and his money are soon parted.

Yip, don't want the iSheep to actually know what they buying is actually fairly cheap.

Rather keep the story going that the price reflects high-quality components.

I'm pretty bullish about this price point as well. To me it's just a highly improved iPad2, and people are paying $400 for that. I love the new colourful chassis design, it has a sense of playfulness about it. And it will be hitting the education market pretty hard. Kindle Fire is not even competition as far as I'm concerned. Nexus7 is the only other player on the street and arguably Google actually underpriced it (which admittedly benefits me nicely). I don't think they'll have much trouble shifting these. Even if they do struggle nothing stops them reducing the price till they meet the optimal elasticity point.

$330 is a little high, but as a nexus 7 owner I'd definitely pay more for a better build quality.

iPads carry 90% of tablet web traffic.I think that number would have been in the forefront of their thinking when pricing the mini.Right now they are still the dominant force in the tablet market and can afford to price their tablets at a premium above their competition.
Apple have always marketed their products as premium products so bringing it in at too low a price point would go against the grain.

Apple has never cared about feeding off the bottom.

Nice of Schiller to think of this as a premium product. Apple have lost the plot.

$299 would have been a reasonable starting point,

$299 iPad mini
$399 iPad 2nd generation
$499 iPad 4th generation

Also $130 extra for LTE model??!!! Bit much!!

Makes cents :p

I never could figure the big jump from wifi to 3G/LTE.

Not sure why Apple must defend their pricing IMO. They have always charged ridiculous amounts before and people need to accept that Apple is not in the business of selling their stuff cheap.

Major cost increase for the manufacturer. Add GSM module and also GPS module, then also lots of royalties related to GSM patents and there you have it.

They're in the business of making money off hardware sales. Google/Amazon decided to try and make money on content, but judging by Google's past results it hasn't worked out entirely well.

Like MWEB and its 2Mbps pricing. At least I can say it's stable for me.

And content.
