Arg. This is the first time I've experienced a schlep using iTunes. The iPad is not detected in iTunes (latest version 10.5.3.3). The drivers installed, all the services are running as it should, but iTunes does not pick it up. Strangely enough, my laptop shows no USB plugged in either, which is weird, since it installed the drivers. I've restarted the laptop and am about to reinstall iTunes. I've read the Apple forums and it seems this is a huge issue that has been coming on for years already. I've also tried different cables. All I see is a logo with a USB cable and an iTunes logo but when I open iTunes, the setup assistant doesn't start... it is not detected. When I go to device manager, I can see that the drivers are installed and is enabled. This is weird. Any advice please? This is very frustrating.

I had similar problems with my new iPhone 4S out of the blue.

Other peoples iPhones and iPads would work on my PC, even my iPHone 4S would work on other peoples PC's. But for the life of me I could not get my phone to connect to my PC. It would not even charge.

After numerous uninstalls (p.s. a good uninstall program is IOBit freeware), I decided to take a step back.

I knew it had something to do with the mobile device driver which is responsible for USB communications to the iDevice.

I went to Start, Devices and Printers, (on windows 7), and found this: (this is after the driver installed)

It has a question mark as the logo before.

Right clicked it, and clicked "Troubleshoot".

The troubleshooter realised that, although I had the Mobile Device USB Driver installed on my PC, it had not been installed for my 4S.. So it proceeded to install it and problem fixed!

Weird but wonderful way of fixing it :)

Thanks guys. Weird thing just happened. I uninstalled the drivers and then reinstalled it and now the iPad is picked up in My Computer as a camera

@Fxit_man: When I do that, the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is no longer there like before. Instead it just says Apple iPad but it detects it as a camera.

@D3x: It doesn't seem to be charging from the USB port.

EDIT: In Device Manager, it is detected as a portable device and the Apple Mobile drivers are not listed.

I have also had this problem, although mine was more of a hardware fault. The hardware inside wasn't seated correctly for the USB cable to connect properly.

no plug it in the wall charger and see if it says charging?

if not then hold down the home and sleep button till it turns off, wait a minute and turn back on and try again.

Good stuff :)

It usually wont show that it is charging from the USB port unless you up the voltage.

It is in fact charging slowly, but if you want to charge it quicker then you will need to up the voltage of your USB port.

Works for many, but I got a blue screen after doing it, so not for my mobo.. (and my mobo is ASUS even! :p)

It does charge when I use the charger.

Also go to services and set to automatic the "apple mobile device" service. Start it . Unplug and replug the device.

I've now tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers but it keeps detecting it as a camera :( Why does Apple not fix this issue? It's been going on for years already :(

Okay, I came across this:

I had the same issue on my work laptop XP Pro, here is how I fixed it.

1) go to device manager (right click on my computer and select manage)
2) select device manager
3) right click on imaging devices
4) select APPLE IPAD or APPLE IPHONE and then right click
5) update driver
6) select choose from a specific location (advanced)
7) tick the first option its called (search of the best driver in these locations)
8) make sure you tick this box (include this location in the search)
9) put this path C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
10) press next then finish

At least now it installed the Apple Mobile drivers.
