I think that instead of "server" writers meant "media hub". iPad is clearly an extension of a mac in the same way as iPod, iPhone and AppleTV, but recent revisions of all of these can be used as standalone devices (if you get your media from the iTunes Store).

There is nothing to say that free = better, certainly as far as server OSes go.
Snow Leopard Server is an impressive product with a short first boot to productivity cycle - much shorter and easier than a LAMP machine.

Im sure Macs do what they want them to do, lol. I own one so I should know :)

Are people really silly enough to use mac as a server? Does it offer some special benefit that better and free server OS`s dont offer? Or is it just for gullible people?

Aw come on, dude. We're not running ATM networks or NASA launches with them. They function just perfectly for home use. They serve up files and media without any requirement for a tech.

I got nothing against Mac, great hardware and OS, but the iGranade and iTampon are disgraces to Apple, and FYI I have not had a BSOD in 6 months or longer (XP SP3)

or usb ports...
or multi tasking...
or flash video...
or. sd cards..

Personally I think Jobs lost the plot on the device. Beautiful in theory and possibility, extremely terrible in practicality.

I have to admit, your "no bsod" comment holds water, I mean, thats why I use my Sharp Calculator. Its also Bsod free :) It just doesnt do much.

I really hope future generations of Ipad are more practical... cause it has loads of potential.

Or run apps that are not "approved" by apple.

So an expensive and complicated NAS box :D

FFS, if you want USB ports and cameras and memory slots then get a freaking computer. It's not hard to understand. Really it isn't.

This is a gadget designed for media convenience, not for computing.

I'm so glad there are people who get it.

Disgraces? If I could actually figure out which products you're actually referring to it might be worth refuting.

Sounds like you are at an AA meeting. Do Microsoft issue you "chips" for the number of days your system can manage without crashing?

Oh your an apple fanboi? I just know how to use and care for a PC, I don't need a locked down kiddie system encase I Break something :p

and I figgerd out why its called an iPad, because its not a tablet PC, else it would be called the iTablet (how imaginative Apple is)

The Adam from Notion Ink looks very interesting. I was hoping that the Ipad would be a good alternative to the Kindle, but the Adam seems to offer a much better media experience than either of them; without the patronising, control freak attitude that Apple has.

This discussion is moot.

Remember when the iPod was first released? Probably not...

1st gen ipod was firewire only, no windows support, required itunes 2.0 for OS9 (nobody ran OSX 10.1 at the time), no support for photos, videos etc. Even when it was released for windows, you still needed a firewire card to connect to a pc.

Flash forward to today. 10 Billion songs sold in tunes, Ipod touch, Iphone and the list goes on.

Don't bury the iPad until it's released and we know what it can do.

Bwana's very valid point, leave revision 1 for somebody else to find out.

That was a dumb outburst.....let me explain, and I can't draw pictures here to explain for you, so please try to understand. If the iPad does NOT have USB ports, or memory slots etc then there is NO reason to get one - my iPhone and iTouch does the same thing on a slightly smaller screen !!!! For $ 50.00 worth of extra components, they would have a winner, and have a product that would have greater appeal. Jobs even said - the iPad is supposed to slot firmly between the iTouch and the MacBook - but IMHO it will slot directly on top of the iTouch, and very, very far from the MacBook !!!!

But, yes, as I said in an earlier post in this thread - the iPad WILL get all those features I mentioned like USB, memory slots, camera etc - it will just be a matter of time. They will sell 20 million of the bare bones ones, then add features and sell 20 million more, then add more features and sell another 20 million etc. Apple are known to be on top of their game when it comes to marketing - they know how to make max turnover off one product.

I have an ipod touch and it is the biggest white elephant I own. A pretty useless gadget. Bought it, used it for a week or two then it ended up in a drawer for a year or so. Dug it out about a week ago to use it as an ebook reader (stanza). For that it is ok but a bit small. But for the price I paid for the thing it is a complete waste, no way I will buy an iPad.

How much do you want for your iPod Touch? I have found it to be the most useful gadget I have ever bought and would like a second one with more capacity. Mine is an 8GB 1st gen.

If you need to attach a camera or a card reader you do so via the dock connector which makes much more sense than a built in SD card reader which many amateur and professional photographers cant use anyway.

This isnt a new model. Apple did exactly the same thing with the iPod Photo.

The one thing I see apple adding is a webcam - everything else you mention is doubtful. They didnt do it with the iPhone and they wont do it with the iPad.

I use my 32gb ipod touch every day constantly - movie watching, mp3 listening, ebook reading, light gaming. I thought lack of usb was a biggie at first as well - then I can't really find any reason for it to have a usb port. What would you plug in? A camera? It'll be tethered to iTunes anyway and I can zip pics onto the iTouch pretty easily that way. A webcam? You'd have driver issues - I foresee that being added to the sync port. Flash drive? I dunno perhaps I guess...again there's the spectre of driver issues. I think I'd get one of these things if I could and I believe it would be quite handy. Now expandable memory there's something that would be useful, I can certainly see that.
