That was a dumb outburst.....let me explain, and I can't draw pictures here to explain for you, so please try to understand. If the iPad does NOT have USB ports, or memory slots etc then there is NO reason to get one - my iPhone and iTouch does the same thing on a slightly smaller screen !!!! For $ 50.00 worth of extra components, they would have a winner, and have a product that would have greater appeal. Jobs even said - the iPad is supposed to slot firmly between the iTouch and the MacBook - but IMHO it will slot directly on top of the iTouch, and very, very far from the MacBook !!!!

But, yes, as I said in an earlier post in this thread - the iPad WILL get all those features I mentioned like USB, memory slots, camera etc - it will just be a matter of time. They will sell 20 million of the bare bones ones, then add features and sell 20 million more, then add more features and sell another 20 million etc. Apple are known to be on top of their game when it comes to marketing - they know how to make max turnover off one product.

Man, you sound as if you're being forced to by a freakin' iPad.. are you? If you don't want one, don't buy one. Why do you feel the need to tell everyone why you think it's such a crap product? We don't care. really. I promise.

How much are they going to be here after they've been through the local profiteers?

Yeah sorry but $500 at the low end is very respectably priced.

FFS, if you want USB ports and cameras and memory slots then get a freaking computer. It's not hard to understand. Really it isn't.

This is a gadget designed for media convenience, not for computing.

like interacting with flash based .... o wait :p

Well, the kindle can't stream my entire music/video library from my mac using an app, like the ipad can, but that doesn't mean i hate the kindle. No-one is forcing anyone to buy the iPad, i'm surprised by the rabid anti-ipad meme out there. There are plenty of comparable devices with various pros and cons.

yeah i also don't get all the hate, people losing their minds cos there's no usb slot etc.
It's clearly not a netbook/laptop, and when you compare it against other devices in the same category it actually comes off quite well

The biggest Fail of all

Like all the flash based sites give a damn....

who says e-ink is the defining characteristic of an e-reader?
anyway it's clear some people are intent on bashing the device with no good reason as far as i can see (no-one freaked out that the kindle didn't have flash support, or an email client, or..or...), so get to it!

Ok try and read a whole book on that screen, enjoy the pain in your eyes.....
An e-book reader, also called an e-book device or e-reader, is an electronic device that is designed primarily for the purpose of reading digital books and periodicals and uses e-ink technology to display content to readers. The main advantages of these devices are portability, readability of their screens in bright sunlight, and long battery life.

Because the kindle is an eBook reader, the iPad was suppost to be a Tablet PC

I think we'll probably see them start at around R5k and go up to around R9k. I'll just use a cheap one around the house on Wi-Fi for those times when sitting at the desk or having a laptop on my lap isn't really convenient.

It will be amazing to have for home automation if anyone ever thought of building an application around it. Outside buzzer rings, iPad flashes the feed from the camera onto the screen. Speak through intercom to visitor. Push button A to open the gate, or push button B to unleash the dobermans. :)

I really like that you can use it to access your shared iTunes libraries on Wi-Fi, as well as stream media to it from other computers and libraries in your network. It will be an awesome remote control for a DSLR using onOne.

That lcd argument is nonsense, i read on lcd screens all day long with no pain. I read on the iphone/blackberry, i used to read on the nokia... no pain. Maybe you need to see a doctor?

The jury is still out on the daylight display quality of the ipad, we'll have to wait and see. It definitely is a book reader (although not by your narrow definition), but clearly it's also more. I don't recall reading anywhere that apple claimed to be making a tablet pc, just a lot of rumours and speculation. Anyway i look forward to it, even just to use as a mutlitouch control surface for my DAW, the iphone already does a great job at that but it's gonna kickass on that big display. I think we'll see some killer apps for audio professionals on this device.

I have to say that i would run to the shops to purchace the ipad if it had a microphone and camera for skype.
My question would be why doesn't the iphone have a forward facing camera for video calls. It is the one feature i would really love to see on the iphone. (especially if you could use it with skype on the iphone)
The ipad seems to me like a larger iphone without the phone which would make it a large ipod touch.
Also if the ipad comes with 3g then in SA you would need a sim card and then it should also make calls and again making the ipad a big iphone.
It is a great gadget that needs to be developed further to get the most out of what it truly needs cause to be honest if you have a netbook it already does much more than the ipad.
Other manufacturers are coming up with very similar devices with the extra usb and sd slots and cameras yet i do not trust these until i see them working.
I think i'm going to wait with the ipad and only if temptation wins or the lottery goes my way this week will i get one without a camera.

They should. No website should want to alienate that many users.

Why don't you try then report back.

Does the iPad give you free local 3G? Like the Kindle?
I doubt they will - the kindle is text only while the iPad is a multimedia device - text, audio, video, etc. Vodacom or MTN will want money for all that data.

Well the iPad doesn't have any GSM support so that argument is moot.

I read all day on my iTouch with no eye strain - and I've been reading on lcd's for years. The major advantage of e-ink for me is outdoors readability - but the iTouch's screen is the best one I've used in that regard. iPad will be a fantastic ebook reader with or without e-ink. Actually I really wish e-ink had a backlight - because i read a lot in darker areas, where LCD is perfect.
