Ok, I'm confused at the moment with the different ipads available:

iPad 1 (First ipad)
iPad 2
iPad 3 (Without retina display)
iPad 3 (With retina display)

Is the 3rd Gen ipad the same as the ipad 3?

Sorry stupid question, would just like to make sure before I buy.

I have looked on the apple website, they only have the ipad 2 & ipad with retina display & mini

http://www.apple.com/ipad/compare/

Regards

The "iPad 3 " which used to be The New iPad has been completely replaced with the iPad 4, now called iPad with Retina Display. The iPad 2 however is still available at a cheaper rate. There is also an iPad mini.

A ok, so the ipad with the actual description iPad 3 is the one with retina display, the other 1 was called "the new ipad" which is a iPad 2 with better specs?

iPad (3rd Gen) would then be The New iPad which was launched after the iPad 2?

After the iPad 2, was The New iPad, this also had retina display, now the new one is called iPad with retina display although they both had it.

iPad 1
iPad 2
The New iPad (upgraded iPad 2 with retina display) Commonly called iPad 3 or third generation
iPad 4th Gen with retina display (Commonly called iPad 4 or 4th generation)
iPad mini

Why? f...k knows, apple weird... Should just be 1,2,3,4 & mini ...

The third gen iPad was followed by the fourth gen and were both referred to as the iPad Retina by Apple. Some might be selling off old stock of the third even if Apple isnt selling it anymore.

iPad 1 - 1st generation
iPad 2 - 2nd generation
iPad 3 - 3rd generation retina
iPad 4 - 4th generation retina, lightning dock connector

There is no iPad 3 or 4.

iPad 1 - 1st Generation
iPad 2 - 2nd Generation
"New" iPad 2 with Retina Display - 3rd Generation
"Newer" iPad 2 with Retina Display and Lightning Connector - 4th Generation

You can buy the iPad 2 without Retina alongside the 4th Generation "New" iPad.

Well I think Apple is a cock of a company, releasing a product ("The New iPad - 3rd Gen") and promptly discontinuing it after 7 months. All the while fully aware of the massively better CPU of the 4th gen iPad so close on release.... That imo is low...

They can take a leaf out of the Osborne Computer Corporation's playbook… well they could if they hadn't gone bankrupt in 1985. At least they got the Osbourne Effect named after them.

Thanks for clearing this up!

I've been doing some research and it seems that the mini gets a bad review due to the screen, would you rather buy the 3rd gen before buying the mini?

Can't afford the 4th gen btw

Only reason I'm still considering the mini is due to the lightning connector.

The iPad retina (aka third and fourth gen ipads) and iPad Mini are so different I'd hate to have to choose one or the other. It was hard enough to pick one to take with me in the mornings.

In the end my missus helped out though, and claimed the mini for herself. :o

Well that's precisely why they didn't call it the iPad 3 or iPad 4.

This is nothing but a revision due to a retooling of their factories.

Anyone we went and "upgraded" thinking it's a new device are the real "cocks" are you put it.

Nobody blinks twice when Nokia/Blackberry bring out a new phone with a new silly model number...because it's just not that relevant. Minor revisions are exactly that...updates to stock for people who would buy the new product.

Very different products.

I would wait for the 2nd generation iPad mini. Could be out as early as March 2013!! But a more realistic release date would probably be around May/June 2013.
