iPads at kalahari.net

absolutely stupid price if you ask me. Insane.

I was forced to pay $ 1100.00 for my 64GB 3GB iPad. I was in the USA for one week only, and there was absolutely NO STOCK AT ALL in any of the Apple stores around the country - no matter what model, they were all out, wi-fi and 3G. I placed an order for one through Apple, for me to collect at the Cincinnati Apple store, however, when it was still not available on the day that I left, I had to go onto eBay, and find a seller that had the one I was after. I met the guy at a Starbucks, and it was in the same condition as though I had bought it from the store - all still sealed. He had it priced at $ 1200.00 on ebay (that is the going rate on eBay for this top of the range one), but he dropped $100 because I was collecting and paying cash.

He turned out to be a student at Indiana State University, and had bought a batch to sell at a profit to pay for his studies. I was quite happy to pay the premium to get it. The store price for mine is $ 829.00 (EXCLUDING STATE TAX) - state tax in Indiana is 7%, or $ 58.03. I would have paid $ 887.03.....so my iPad cost around $ 212 premium, or in ZAR at the exchange rate of R 7.60 and $ 1100, I paid R 8360.00, when I would have paid R 6741 if the store had stock. What do you think ? I paid too much ? I dont think so - I have been back in SA 5 days now, and having a ball with the iPad. Besides, if I didn't pay the premium, I would be without the iPad, and wouldn't know when I would eventually get one - I think they will be a long long time before they are officially released here. There is a huge shortage of them.

BTW, this iPad REALLY shines on 3G. I wouldn't consider any of the wireless ones. I take it wherever I go, and have fast internet and email with me with 3G. Oh, cutting my Vodacom sim card to micro size was easy, and worked first time - the only setting I had to change was the APN to INTERNET.

I'll wait for there to be more availability before I buy. I don't wanna pay more than R5k. R4k if I can help it.

Hi guys,

Apple is also limiting 2 ipads per customer so they are VERY difficult to get hold of. If you want one right now, you need to pay a premium for it - thats just the way it works.

Surfs-up also forgot to mention he should pay VAT once bringing it in to SA, so if you are a store and want to import it, there are a lot of costs.

We also charge a premium for our Apple Ipads as you need to buy them from 3rd party suppliers.

That being said, I got an iPad right after it was released - quite a cool device.

@surfs-up: How much bandwidth are you using on 3G/day? I'm a bit worried about how much the data bundles will end up costing me!

I am not using that much bandwidth - my iPad is obviously not my main piece of hardware for my browsing/email, for that I use ADSL with a WI-FI connection at home. But I went ahead with a prepaid Vodacom 3G package, and bought (I forget what it costs now) something like 1.2GB for around R 189.00 (I think). If you buy the data bundle at the beginning of the month, then it is valid for 2 months - any data not used up in month one rolls into month two. It is still too new, to check how much I am using, but I don't think it's much the last time I checked.

At this price, of course! R5000 or so makes more sense. But with demand high, we won't see that price for a while.
