Was really hoping they'd release the 13 with fingerprint reader support given that they have the tech active in the ipad already

Wife still using a 7+ due to not wanting to move to FaceID only

Face ID is brilliant though, it works fantastically well.

Now that I have an Apple Watch too, I don't even have to take my mask off to unlock it. 10/10 would recommend.

That was a valid argument in the beginning. FaceID works like a charm. It was annoying when covid started with the mask wearing but then they solved that issue with the unlock in conjunction with the watch feature. No way I'm going back.

Most of my usage is with my phone flat down, so FaceID would have me entering my code most of the time.
That said, I don’t see them ever implementing both, you wouldn’t use your phone upside down like an iPad.

She was happy with her 7+ at the time the 8 was released - the generations have moved on by now though - and SE screen is too small (compared to the 7 plus)

Oh, I'm with you on this - I'm very happy with my FaceID - that said, I also have a watch - she doesn't want one

So she's between a rock and a hard place - wants the size of the 7 plus screen; wants TouchID; doesn't want an Android phone; loves Apple Pay; doesn't like FaceID (not logical, I know) - so she's going to have to stick with the 7 plus until her need for a newer phone outweighs her dislike of FaceID (or Apple release a new gen phone in a plus size with Touch ID....)

You'd be surprised at how many people regard TouchID as a deal breaker for a new phone - my brother who is in the medical profession upgraded to the SE for the same reason - it had TouchID and the iPhone 12 didn't, and he wears a mask the entire day.

Perhaps you should help her overcome the irrational dislike of FaceID. It's superior to touch ID in my opinion. Or at least as good. I would agree if it was an Android device, their Face Unlock kak is about as useful as a prestik padlock, but Apple do it really well.

Sounds like she's stuck on some datum someone told her one time and can't move on or think for herself on the sunject. No offense intended, just sounds like what's happening.

Either way, I doubt Touch ID will be a feature any time soon, if ever.

My upgrade is due soon, and was really keen on the Pro, but no fingerprint support means I'll be carrying on with Samsung for the foreseeable.

Did FaceID get better with the newer phones? I have an XR and I feel like I get annoyed with FaceID more times than I should...even with a watch (that helps tremendously though). Would love a TouchID comeback but no chance in hell I'm afraid.

I have no issues with FaceID on mine, it just works fantastically, sometimes at angles I wouldn't expect it to.

Apple sells its 2-billionth iPhone, with Steve Jobs legacy still evident

Apple recently sold its two-billionth iPhone, according to a new analyst report, which argues that the Steve Jobs legacy is still evident in the iPhone 13.

In one way, Apple has greatly departed from a principle Steve demanded when he returned to the company in 1997: simplification of the product lineup. But an analyst argues that it’s another of Steve’s beliefs that is still driving Apple’s success today …

No Steve-like simplicity in the iPhone lineup

When Steve Jobs returned to Apple, he famously trashed the complex lineup of Macs sold at that time, and said he wanted a simple quadrant: a consumer desktop, a consumer laptop, a pro desktop, a pro laptop. Looking at the company’s current iPhone lineup, however, it’s more like the “before” than the “after.”

At the bottom end, you can buy an iPhone SE with 64GB storage for $400. At the top end, you can pay $1,600 for an iPhone 13 Pro Max with 1TB storage. All in, there are a total of 24 different iPhone SKUs at 18 different prices.

What’s particularly stark in Horace Dediu’s impressive pricing chart above is that, 14 years after the original iPhone sold for $400, you can still buy a brand-new iPhone from Apple for that same $400 – but you can also pay up to four times that.

Things are even more complex than that, says Dediu, when you also factor in carrier promos, trade-in deals, and the secondary market.

Just recently, the 2 billionth iPhone was sold. Unlike the 1 billionth, there was no announcement, no celebration. Partly this is because Apple stopped reporting unit shipments, but partly it’s because it’s not as interesting to talk about 2 billion as it is about 1 billion. There is a desensitizing when numbers get that big […]

The spread of phone price points is wider than ever. Reaching $1600, the range still starts at $399 in the US (excluding taxes.) The total range (number of lines in each year) is increasing also, now 24 mainly due to the addition of a 1TB storage option. NB: There are now two iPhone minis (12 and 13) and one SE bringing up the rear.

Carrier incentives are picking up again. There are tremendous trade-ins and incentives for financing new iPhones which is bound to create retail traffic. Also with the opening of more economies, there is likely to be a surge in shopping. Bear in mind that around 400 million users have iPhones older than 3 years. Trade-in values are as high as $1000. Which leads to…

A thriving secondary market. The used smartphone market is dominated by iPhones and this drops the floor for entry into the iPhone ecosystem to essentially $0.

Caviar unveils custom iPhone 13 Pro collection that is inspired by Rolex watches

Is it a fashion faux pax to have a phone that doesn’t match your fancy Rolex watch? Probably not, but why risk it – Caviar created a series of custom iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max phones that are inspired by various Rolex watch models.

For example, the Olive Rays has a sunburst pattern reminiscent of a watch face, below that are metal links made out of titanium and gold-plated metal like an upscaled Jubilee bracelet. This one was inspired by the Rolex Datejust collection, which has been using Jubilee bracelets since it was introduced in 1945 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Rolex.

The Yacht Club phone takes after the Rolex Yacht-Master II. It features a bronze-titanium panel and a pink on blue watch bezel, plus a bronze frame.

The Dark Sky takes after the Rolex Sky-Dweller, specifically the REF 326238. It encircles black stained oak with gold plated metal.

The Meteorite is inspired by the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. The top part of the back is made out of real meteorite material, the bottom is polished titanium with black PVD coating surrounding a carbon fiber panel.

These four will be available for around $6,000-$8,500 depending on whether you want an iPhone 13 Pro or 13 Pro Max as base and how much storage you need.

Buying an iPhone 13 in some countries requires more than 3 months of work, research shows

The iPhone 13 lineup is finally here, and it comes at the same prices as last generation depending on where you are. As reported last week, iPhone 13 prices can go up to almost $3000 in some countries. Now a new Money SuperMarket research shows how many hours (or months) people need to work to buy the brand new iPhone 13 in different regions around the world.

Instead of just considering the full price of the devices in each country, the research is based on how long someone needs to work to afford an iPhone 13 (the 128GB version). This is because while some countries may have less expensive iPhone than others, the minimum wage may also be lower, which makes it harder for people to buy it there.

Similar to what a recent Nukeni report revealed, Money SuperMarket points out that Brazil is definitely the country with the most expensive iPhone 13. There (or I should say here), an iPhone 13 128GB costs around $1449. Someone earning a minimum wage in Brazil needs to work 86 days to buy a new iPhone.

However, Brazil is not the country where the iPhone 13 is least affordable with a minimum wage. While the same model costs $1,025 in the Philippines, people there need to work 97 days to buy it.

Hong Kong has the cheapest iPhone 13 128GB priced at $874, and those living there on a local minimum wage can get a new iPhone with 7 days of work. But the country that tops the list of most affordable iPhone 13 is Switzerland, where people need to work less than 7 days to buy an iPhone 13 with the local minimum wage.
