Try connecting to the 2.4GHz channel while keeping the 5GHz wifi password saved and the phone will switch between the two.
I had a similar problem and when I tried 2.4 the problem disappeared.

I use a mesh with band steering - so single SSID and it pushes to where ever is best

Yeah you may try turning it off especially if you've configured anything on your Mesh specific to that device.
