iPhone 15 Rumours & Release Date

Still struggling with the camera system compared to my 12 Pro. I hate Macro Mode using the f2.8 wide, and miss my main lens being able to focus up close. f1.6 or f1.8 on the 12 Pro? Not only does it let more light in, but it’s sharper.

Portrait Mode is also very aggressive in a lack of what it focuses. Two people can be right behind one another, and the front person is blurred. It’s akin to shooting on a low f-stop prime lens with only a slice of focal point. Readjusting the f-stop barely helps.

My one year old had a swimming lesson this morning and Portrait Mode performance was poor compared to my wife’s 12 Pro.

I also seem to be struggling with what must be a shorter focal length (23mm?) of the main lens. 1x Portrait Mode is much further away than on my 12 Pro (around 30mm?). Meaning that I have to use my arms or feet to get closer to the subject.

The other fix is switching to 2x, but then the resolution and quality is much lower.

In a nutshell, only a small portion of the photos I take have improved. Significantly so, but I miss the all-round excellent camera system of my 12 Pro.

:(

I must say, as a bit of a point and shoot kind of guy, I was excited to get my first 'pro' iPhone and compare to the previous 'normal' versions, especially with the chameleons in my garden. And well, I am quite disappointed so far.

I'm wanting to find out if the 15 has these same issues. Per the video @FiestaST posted, there's very little between the 15 and 15 Pro.

Took me a while to 'trust' the Macro mode indicator - what specifically disappoints you with your chameleon shots compared to the old phone?

My eyes simply aren't good enough anymore to discriminate between excellent and good photos so I rely on my kids for independent feedback :p - they assure me that my 14Pro blows their Mom's 13 and their 12's away, so they're always grabbing my phone to take pictures when we're out together.

I'm interested in why 2x resolution and quality is lower - isn't up to 3x purely hardware driven?

Caveat - my eyes really aren't good enough anymore for the nuances of photographic comparison

PS - I shot this in macro mode with my 14Pro

It’s that range just before macro kicks in that is tricky to gauge. The chameleons are hard to focus on in the bushes and long grass and it makes a close up scene very difficult to capture. For example…

Ah, yes, those are tricky especially if you've already used the 3x zoom and still can't quite get the shot you're looking for. I usually 'tap' on the object onscreen to ensure that the camera knows what I want to focus on.

Will always be tricky because it probably uses contrast to know where to focus. Had to tap to focus on this macro shot I just took on my 13 Pro for that very reason:

Yeah, but that's my problem, I'm trying to get a wider scene not a specific part. There are two chameleons in the picture so the only option to get both in some kind of focus is to take the shot from further away and then crop. Mind you, it's probably me, I'm not much of a camera expert :p I'll continue to mess about.

How's everyone's titanium finish holding up? I keep seeing reports of scratches on the titanium body. A lot of reports say the PDV coating is easily marred. I have none on mine (just over a month old), but obviously have a case on it. To be honest I noticed more subtle marks on my 14 Pro Max's stainless steel frame around the same time age wise - probably the gloss finish, but the titanium is holding up very well.
No issue here, my now over 2 months old white 15 PM looks brand new, then again it also stays in a case and I believe it may be the Blue that has the chipping issues, please correct me if I am wrong though.

Agreed, the the titanium seems to keep micro scratches away, I am interested to see how the charging port area looks in a year’s time.

Eish, sorry to hear it’s not serving the purpose you need it to. Tell me something have you tried playing around with the settings like maybe using it at 1.2x or 1.5x (if you tap the 1x it will cycle between 1x, 1.2x and 1.5x and keep the quality)?
You can also then set it to maybe launch at 1.2x in the Camera settings.

If you already tried the above then my next suggestion, have you tried to changing Photo Mode from 24MP to 12 MP? My assumption is that if you change this to 12MP it should technically operate like the 12 Pro.

EDIT:
iOS 17.2 also brings some updates to the cameras, so do try updating to see if it improves.

Is it true the iphone 15 pro heating issues were resolved in an update by underclocking the processor? Are people paying more for less now? May as well buy a 14 pro

Edit: per the linked article, the processor has not been under clocked.

Those issues were solved a week after the phone was released... 2 months ago. Performance benchmark figures have increased too.

It's amazing how people harp onto a non-issue, because they can't harp onto any other fault with the iPhone.
