So less than a month ago i took the plunge and got myself a black 16gb iPhone 3G... I am (was) a huge apple fan due to the pleasent experience i have had in the past with their hardware build quality. I have a Macbook Pro which i absolutely adore and an ipod video which has given me many hours of listening pleasure with no hassles. I guess you could call me an apple fanboi.

I wish i could say the same about the iPhone, after just 3 weeks i have multiple dead pixels in the screen and it freezes up daily even after upgrading it to the 2.2 software. To make matters worse the freaking mute button fell off yesterday in my hand AAAARRRRGGG. I am pedantic in making sure that it is in a case and well looked after.

So i go to Vodacrap and they tell me it will take 7 days for them to evaluate the phone and they will not replace it until they have evaluated it!! i paid in over 3k to get this piece of **** and it hasn't even lasted a month!

Has anyone else experienced problems like these with an iPhone 3G?? i know people have with vodacrap!

I haven't had any problems with mine so far (It's also about month old)..and the new 2.2 update makes a HUGE difference in stability and speed. Seriously man, if the mute button even falls off you've definitely received a dud. You have all my sympathy dude, customer support on phones SUCK in SA.

+1
Service does suck.

I have an imported 2G one and thankfully had no issues in the 8 months I've had it yet. using pay as u go.
I don't like cell phone contracts at all.

If it breaks, I'll have to just use my old cell phone again, but hopefully by that time "legal" ones will be cheaper.
Paid R4000 for my 16 gig one, and will be happy to pay that price again.

I can't help but feel cheated! :(

Cheated indeed. The problem is who to blame... Apple? The manufacturer? Vodacom? Faults on products happen all the time and I guess we just have to live with it. The only way you could be really screwed now is if those Vodacom @ssholes don't sort out your problem as quick as possible... taking into account how much we pay for this damn phone I'd expect an even more than average quality of service from their part. There's no way in hell I would settle for dead pixels, crappy build quality etc. on something that costs me 600+ bucks a month.

Don't get me wrong, I love my iPhone and I knew I was going to be screwed over with the high costs involved, but I'd rather pay more and have something that improves my phone/pda experience than settling for the other "spec. war" devices on offer. I guess Vodacom should thank Nokia (and CellC) for giving me that N80 that worked on my nerves every day for 24 months.

Small tip before sending in you iPhone, make 100% sure that the little litmus strip at the bottom of you 3.5 jack is still white, try to take a pic of it if you can...
Dont let them tell you its Beyond Economical Repair.;)

Quite disturbing the amount of QC quibbles in the current gen iPhones. My 1st gen has been the best built and nicest device I have ever owned... such a pity they didn't follow that up with something even better.

OP: hope you get a replacement that brings you some delight, the iPhone really can be 'all that'.

Ha ha ha how sweet of the apple fan boys to try to get a little kick into Nokia on a thread about their phones falling apart!! And to think I still have my Nokia 5110 in full working order in my bedside draw from who knows how many years ago... and the worst that happened is the numbers have rubbed off the keys!

 yeah...whatever, asswipe.

Anyway, DOGSHOW443, let us know what happens with your phone...
Good luck

But the 5110 is probably the best made phone ever. That's what made Nokia what it is today.

The N80 was the most annoying phone I have ever owned - no battery life, dropped calls because it had no signal strength, fat and chunky, and I'd not blame anyone who suffered through 24 months with one for giving another brand a try after that. And before you prime yourself for the usual personal attack on me because I dissed a Nokia, my next phone is still a Nokia, just a bit better. I've also got old Nokias in great condition, but the N80 isn't one of them.

agreed owned an N80 for about a week before I gave it to my cousin and continued using my 7260, but now the proud owner of an e51, and let me tell u Nokia pressed out all the wrinkles of their s60v3 or symbian 9 OS and now sits with what I consider to be nicest OS currently available on a phone, a solidly business orientated OS (but doesn't slack on the multimedia side either)

moLe : Does the S60V3 UI still do that EXCRUCIATINGLY irritating thing where it asks you for an access point every damn time you need to connect to the net or a wifi spot? maaan that thing drove me insane, and it took AGES to load every time...

Do you still remember the Nokia 8210? Maaan that phone was epic. I remember it was almost too small, but the fact that it was so small meant you could drop that thing from a building at it would probably survive.
It's one of the things I miss on these new smartphones... I can't even imagine what a new widescreen smartphone would look like when it falls about 6 feet or so...

P.S. Oh ..and the good 'ol 6210 (Business Phone). My GF had one for a few months, she once went 12 days without charging. It'll be a few years before we see stats like that on the current gen. phones!

ahhh, that old thing with the gold face - just went on and on... never a day's hassel and the battery lasted forever...

yeh it does, but its way more responsive, u can also set your default connection and let it connect automatically(but doesnt work with java apps) . other problem I discovered on my e51 that if u are in a location where u are paired to two wireless connections it keeps on hoping between them, which whould be fine if u are just browsing but not so cool if u one is your SIP server and u are attempting making a phone call
