I recently discovered dead pixels on my Iphone's display and sent it in to vodacom. They are saying that there is a hairline crack next to the mute button and because there is physical damage they wont swap it out under warranty. My phone has been in a hard cover since day 1 and has never been dropped. I asked them what the crack has got to do with the dead pixels and they couldnt answer me. I spoke to a guy named Paul on 1944 and he was absolutely useless at helping me (as well as his superior who told me everything I already knew). He couldnt give me any details on the dead pixel problem, but just because a hairline crack has appeared the technicians wont touch the phone. I am despreate as this phone is 6 months old and Im not going to pay R6800 to replace it!! I will post the same story on Hellopeter to see if anything happens, but Im pi$$ed off to say the least! VC is quick to sell you the phone, but when something goes wrong they're just not interested! I have been with VC such a long time and this is the first major issue I've had.
Anyone with info, please post it here or pm me. Thanks :(

The hairline cracks appear due to heat issues.

Like when I play Galaxy on Fire or Burning Tyres on my iPhone 3G, I can actually feel the back of the phone getting hot.

I've removed my silicone case and slapped a gelaskin on my phone. Works a treat.

Try and tell that to the people at VC. Its been a while since I have had such bad customer service!

I would print out some articles and pictures and take it to them. The fact that there is mention that Apple has replaced phones in the ars article is encouraging.

I would do the same ... it worked when I had a Macbook Pro's battery replaced. Initially they didn't want to help me, until I showed them all the related issues, then they replaced it

Thanks guys, I will def print out some articles and take that with to the Vodacare. Its just sad that even though its not VC's fault (but Apple's), they are still not prepared to stick out their necks and help the customer. Will report back on whats happened.

Jannie please keep us updated.
VC jumps the ship as soon as there are any expensive repairs. They will find any story, physical damage, liquid damage and God know what else to get out of it.
VC blames Vodacare. VC offers the warranty, they should honour it. Their relationship with Vodacare has got nothing to do with us.
Sadly, I do not hold my breath for you.

What Vodacom is doing is nothing than a SCAM. They are thieves.

Two of my phones worth more than R10,000.00 were declared BER Liquid damage. I got them repaired for R1,200.00. I have affidavits that there was no liquid damage what so ever. These companies are prepared to testify in court.

I am seeking legal advice at the moment. Both phones were under warranty.

If any body can help let us start a blog to get others who had the same problems to get even.

I am going to sue them and need as many other instances to proof that Vodacom is using their liquid and physical damage as a way to get out of their obligations.

I am sure they have stolen enough money already that we can force them to take these clauses out of their contracts.

You are absolutely right Getafix! Its a SCAM! I remember way back I had a Nokia 7110 Slide phone and was also told by VC that I had water damage! I got it repaired by a local company for R300 and they decalred that there was no water damage whatsoever.

I phoned Vodacare to return the iPhone to me, but this is not tha last they have heard from me. I read up on numerous articles where people all over the world had their iphones replaced because of surface cracks. I will take VC to the Ombudsman if they dont replace my phone. I have gathered enough evidence, through Google, that it is a common problem with iPhones and it only took me 5min. The internet is full of writings from people with the same problems. I WILL win this case, I promise you that!

I posted this prob on Hellopeter, but what sfunny is that there are a number of iphone problems like mine....but all are unanswered! Isnt that funny!? VC is just ignoring these problems....guess what? They are gonna see a side of me that even I dont like....;)

Who did you speak to at Vodacare ?
PM me your details w.r.t phone number to contact you on , email address and so on.

I have insured my iPhone with Vodacare, but I'm wondering if it's not better to insure it with Santam.

Not happy to read this....insurance is to have peace of mind, but sounds like I'm paying for nothing.

Good old water damage. I sent my missus phone in only to have it rejected for liquid damage. Nothing to lose I opened it up, blew it out with compressed air and it works as good as ever. There of course was no indication of the supposed liquid damage.

@kingrob - I think you're right to be concerned. Stick it on your household insurance.

I think the whole problem with liquid damage excuse is that the liquid detection sticker is too sensitive.

Update :

I just insured my iPhone with Santam for R8500, monthly payment is R120.

When it was insured with Vodasure, they charged me R149.

Thanks bwana, you just saved me R29 a month! :)

*I hope I didn't over insure my phone? No clue what an iPhone 3G 16GB black will cost me cash.

Update :

I was spot on!!

Just phoned my local Vodashop and an iPhone 3G 16GB will cost me R8500 cash. :)

I picked one up for the SO at the iStore in Canal Walk for R7600, but I think R8500 is about what I insured it for. Plus when the new model comes out in June the price will be high again, so you want to insure it for replacement value.
