Vodacom........

WHY?!?!?!?!?!? is tethering not available for the iPhone???????????????

For crying in a bloody bucket of guts and gore. EVERY SINGLE FRIKKEN PHONE IN THE LAST FEW YEARS CAN BE USED TO GIVE AN INTERNET CONNECTION TO MY LAPTOP... WHY ON EARTH ARE YOU NOT ALLOWING THAT TO WORK FOR THE IPHONE NOW THAT IT SUPPORTS IT??!?!?!?!?!?!

Sorry for the caps guys...but honestly. Sometimes i think someone must be screamed at and someone must be shot at vodacom repeatedly

because of their stupid contracts. they decided to make it unlimited 3G for users of the USA, so enabling people to use it for real Internet, would cost them money....

iirc there are programs to counter this - just google it.

I am sure Vodacom will release a config file to enable it soon.

It only makes sense - more use = more data = more money.

I fully agree with you.

If people start using their iPhones regularly as data modems, they will have to purchase bolt-on data packages, cos the 250MB will still be ok for checking the weather, download a few app updates and occasional surfing, but not for regular internet.

Why would Vodacom not provide a service that can make them money?

I followed the instructions on the website mentioned earlier in the thread and it worked. I note though that it is said Vodacom has (in their infinite wisdom) disabled it so I dont know how long it will be working for.

At least I know tethering itself works and much more reliably than the buggy PDANet I was using before.

Jip, morkhans said the same thing in the iphone thread, so we know it does work.

I'm sure the config file will be available from Vodacom soon, the technical guys in VC's smartphone division must have their hands full. Android just arrived as well. :)

*sigh* geez sometimes one wonders what's going on at vodacom...

You know it really blows my mind because of how pathetic they can be sometimes. Lets look at this situation we have here...

Whether you're an iphone fan or not, or think its the worst phone on the market and you cling to you nokia, fact is, due to Apple's marketing, the iPhone is like the biggest news in the mobile industry. Everyone that knows something about mobile phones knows that it exists.

Here we have our SP called Vodacom. They didnt even make the effort of releasing a statement about iPhone OS 3.0 to the public. Secondly they didnt even bother informing their support staff about issues like tethering/mms. All other phones on Vodacom can send mms and tether (use phone as a modem).

Now my question is: Is vodacom just retarded and doesnt care about this? Do they think they're too good? Why couldnt they just make a public announcement saying listen guys... Due to x, y and z, it wont work, it will however be available in iPhone OS 3.1.

They are so stupid, because now they're own support staff is having hell because they have a huge amount of calls from customers who are annoyed with them. They can't give proper answers, because support was never informed and doesnt actually know.

Anyhow so at one point I phone support and they tell me it wont be available until they had undergone training to support these functions. HONESTLY... iPhone OS 3.0 have been in the works for over 6 months, it's not like its all brand new and got released yesterday!

It really just drives me nuts how a company like Vodacom can be so oblivious to the world around them. At least thats the impression they give customers.

Vodacom. Please for crying out loud. GET YOUR **** TOGETHER!

Your reply sounds of a very naive little boy who has a new/old toy

You clearly do not understand business rules and schematics surrounding the release of the OS bedsides this was released by APPLE and not VC..

i would not take your post seriously

Hi evolution, I hear what you are saying, but just take the following into consideration :

1. Every user on the Vodacom network (could just as well be MTN or CellC) wants to feel that their mobile phone is the number 1 priority for their service provider, which can make things hectic for the service provider.

2. The iPhone is not the only smartphone on Vodacom's network. There are Blackberries, Nokias, Samsungs, LGs, SonyEriccsons, HTC, Palm, etc. Vodacom needs to ensure that all these smartphones work 100% on their network + the added features of the phones - and be able to support it.

3. Sometimes phone manufacturers (like Apple) does make last minute changes to software updates and releasing phone settings based on beta software can screw things up.

4. The official firmware/software update for the iPhone only got released yesterday, so I'm sure Vodacom is testing it at the moment and readying the config files to support it.

I'm an iPhone user myself, also think it's the best smartphone ever released, but so does users with Blackberries, HTCs, etc. Guess it's not easy to keep everyone happy.

Vodacom's other major worry must be for iPhone users who just plug the iPhone in, start surfing and then crap themselves when they get a R2000 bill at the end of the month. Remember with the 250MB data bundle that comes with the iPhone, you will be able to start surfing right away and you won't be prompted to buy a data bundle, etc. Some people are just not as informed as we are.

*I learnt to be patient with the iPhone OS 3 update (the 6 weeks felt like a year!) and, as they say, good things come to those who wait. :)

Just my 2c.

Mate, it might come across as naive. But I certainly know that there are lots of factors at work here. The point is that Vodacom makes no effort to make the situation better.

They knew OS 3.0 would be released yesterday. Other carriers around the world notified their users, what do we get. Nothing. On top of that when you phone customer support and mention the word 'tethering and iphone' they dont know what you're talking about. So in other words that indicate to me that Vodacom made no effort to up-skill their support staff regarding these matters.

This creates the impression that Vodacom is oblivious to the world around them or doesnt care...

Good business practice is having clear communication with your customers.

@ kingrob

I hear you too and I fully agree with most of what you say. However... "The official firmware/software update for the iPhone only got released yesterday, so I'm sure Vodacom is testing it at the moment and readying the config files to support it." < While that is correct, I would be very surprised if Vodacom didnt have access to the Gold Master version. Apple rarely make significant changes as a last minute thing that's so significant that it would have required a whole re-training session for support staff.

I would have been happy if Vodacom would have just released a memo on Friday morning to their support staff and put a little slot on their site saying something about it, whether they support the functions or not etc.

Then we all know where we stand, what to expect etc.

It's not so complicated to do that...

I'm with you pal - they have had ample warning, betas have been available for devs for months... unless an update is forthcoming today or tomorrow its not on. This is not a family affair as in: "dont pick on little Johnny -he's a little slow and think of all he has to deal with" -its big business and big bucks... pull up your effing socks vcom!

Just imagine if you were to drag you heels making this months payment... who'd be punting punctuality in that situation... hmmm?
