iPhone 3G Tethering

@ kingrob
I would have been happy if Vodacom would have just released a memo on Friday morning to their support staff and put a little slot on their site saying something about it, whether they support the functions or not etc.

Then we all know where we stand, what to expect etc.

It's not so complicated to do that...

Fully agree with you on this one.

Maybe the call center manager to blame here?

However, I'm still of the opinion that Vodacom actually do want you to enjoy your phone and make full use of it, cos if you do, they're making money and that makes them happy. :)

I think there's three ways Vodacom can go about offering tethering on the iPhone :

1. Offer the config file as a download on their downloads page, with clear instructions on how to get it installed and enable it on your iPhone.

2. Send the file to your phone after you've put in your phone number on the download page

3. You'll have to phone the helpdesk and they'll send you the file

I favor the download page with clear instructions on how to enable and install it on your iPhone, cos then they can also put up a notice saying ''by downloading this file you agree that out of bundle rates might apply after you've depleted your allocated data bundle...bla bla bla'' and give you information as to how to purchase additional data bundles for your phone.

I tried it and it worked for me as well. The issue here is vodacom's uselessness though. But thanks for the tip :D

I'm not holding my breath for Vodacom to do anything, I haven't been blown away by their iPhone support up to now.

When my wife got hers on a new contract she couldn't go online, we had to call 155 who then provisioned us for the 'iphone' APN. Why isn't this done automatically?

Then she finds that when she receives an MMS, she gets an SMS directing her to mms.vodacom4.me.co.za but the picture doesn't display.
Surely they should have tested this, especially for a phone that didn't support MMS as shipped?

Come on Vodacom, you got iPhone exclusivity, let's see the OS 3.0 firmware on your zero-rated download page.

Hmm weird, my nokia can do that out of the box. infact they include software to make it easier. Yet another thing the failphone doesnt get right :p

Just tested the tethering with Bluetooth and USB and it worked from my Vista laptop using the "internet" profile from http://wan.to/iphone/

Edit:
Vodacom prepaid account using a phone bought from IC.

Yeah vodacom sux when it comes to doing their customers a "favour" when there is no money in it for them.
evolution you have all the right to voice your frustration.
I mean, how long before roll overs on data bundles became reality ?? That took YEARS! cause it wasn't in their financial interest
I remember guys moaning months/years for that on the forum.
It stinks so bad, that I'm not even frustrated about it because it's expected!
South African's take poor service way to easily and companies like vodacom milk that for pennies at times, making excuses for vodacom's elite development team is pathetic. I'm sure apple sent loads of correspondance to the dev team, correspondance was done adequately to owners of iphones, so much so , that we new the features, time, date of release.

It's not on their priorities list cause there's no money in it for them, they'll get around to it later. We can only wait AND moan till then.

Dail 082155 , and moan nicely:), then we'll get there, eventually moving it up the priorities list .... yay:erm:
The vodacom beast always needs a kick in the nuts to wake up.

Of course there is money in it for them. People using their iPhone tethered are going to use data . . probably more data than just on device. More data = more money.

Bwana agreed. But iphone users most likely aren't the greatest percentage of data bundle leeches out there for them, ...hence not being high on the their list "To Do" :)

Then again unless they jail broke their phone they've never had tethering at their disposal.

Dont get me wrong - Vodacom dropped the ball because it is in their best interest to provide revenue earners like tethering and mms. :)

Worked for me, USB and Bluetooth.

Be careful of these fixes - they change the APN to 'internet' and does not work in areas that have 3g - I had to restore my phone to default to get rid of the config file and they mess around with MMS as well. See the iPhone thread in the cellular phone forum.

Adsl3G. You can remove an installed profile under setting > network. There's a profile part where you can choose to remove an installed profile. No need to reset your phone at all :)

It would be helpful if the new Vodacom rep would give us an idea when they will be enabling MMS and tethering.

yeah but you know bwana, vodacom gives us the silent treatment so don't get your hopes up....

ps. i think another hellopeter.co.za is what we should do next...

MMS works fine - just put the default MMS settings in the settings under general> network> cellular data network... I know you don't use it though!

MMS works fine for me, but was expecting to find the settings on Vodacom's web site.

I'll wait for VC to enable tethering on the network.
