Hi all,

My iPhone 3G's (8GB) WiFi is dead. It's completely DEAD :erm:

It doesn't pick up ANY networks (the "updating" icon spins continuously) and if I try enter a network manually if fails when I tap JOIN saying "Could not scan for wireless networks".

It used to work perfectly but about two weeks after upgrading to 3.0.1 it suddenly died. My phone is barely 6 months old.

Have tried:
Reset network settings: didn't help.
Restored to backup in iTunes: didn't help.
Restored without backup in iTunes: didn't help.
Restored in DFU mode: didn't help.

There's a huge thread (760 replies so far) on Apple forums with others also having WiFi problems after 3.0 update.

From what I've read it seems the problem may be that OS 3.0 causes the WiFi chip to overheat. Many people say that putting the phone in the freezer for a few mins resolves the issue for a little while but then it stops working again. I'm yet to try this for fear of somehow damaging the phone (and then voiding my warranty, which I am likely to need to use to sort this issue out).

Those who have taken their phones to an Apple Store are given replacement phones, so it really seems like some kind of hardware issue (but possibly caused by OS 3.0 somehow).

So far there has been no official response from Apple. I'm gonna wait it out a bit hoping that they respond soon, because without one I'm afraid of what kind of service (or rather, lack there of) I will get from VodaCare.

Wondering if anyone else here is experiencing this?

Richard :)

Nope, mine is working fine and I am on 3.0.1. Unfortunately, here we do not a cool apple store that just exchange

Richard, have you tried restoring you iPhone? Try restoring the device several times, even with OS 3.0 and not 3.0.1 and see if that works. If that doesn't work, then I would make a big scene at Vodacare, providing proof from the Apple Discussions, that it is a known issue and you are entitled to a replacement.

Thanks for the replies guys. It seems it is only affecting a small subset of handsets right now.

Yep thanks limnos, as I mentioned in my post I've tried several restores, including from DFU but nothing has helped. I've probably restored it 4 or 5 times to no avail.

Thanks but I'm loathed to try and get a replacement from Vodacare without some official acknowledgment of the problem from Apple. Hopefully as more of a fuss is kicked up and some media coverage is [hopefully] gained, Apple will respond. But I guess even once they do, I will still have to make a big scene at Vodacare in any case to get them to replace it, but hopefully it will be easier.

Let's hope Apple sorts it out soon :)
