So iOS 4.1 is supposed to include significant performance increases for iPhone 3G users. Scouring on the net I found some brief mentions from beta testers that there was indeed improvement. I am busy restoring to 4.1 GM as we speak and will post feedback shortly.

If anyone else has done this already, please post your findings.

First 5min and things "feel" faster, but the tester is always messages (SMS) and it still feels like ages before it opens... Will post more later.

Things are definitely more responsive, tapping on a number in the contact list actually happens the moment you tap it. Mail is also very much better when opening.

After a weekend of use, I must say I am very happy with iOS 4.1. This is the release they should have had for 4.0.

I am SO excited about this!!! Can't wait for 8 Sept. :)

*Was starting to think like what a lot of web sites were hinting at - that Apple was deliberately starting to slow down the iPhone 3G, just to force you to purchase the new iPhone 4. Glad I've been proven wrong.

SO....what's your verdict? Can I use my iPhone 3G for another year and wait for the iPhone 5?

Yeah, also hoping to see benefits, but I did a clean restore to 4.0.2 and it seemed a little faster than 4.0

I did the same, but sometimes there is still lag....and it didn't help that I configured an iPad recently...almost started crying when having to go back to my slow iPhone 3G again. :(

I must say, although I'm sure 4.1 brings a speed improvement, a 3Gs or 4 are just way faster than a 3G.

Recent articles claim that iOS 4.1 gives you iOS 3.1.3 performance again, which will make me superhappy.

Why wait when there is a perfectly good GM release floating around the interwebs ;)

It's done enough to tie me over till iPhone 4 hits SA and I upgrade in Dec/Jan. So if you are a patient man you should be able to wait.

me too... my 3G is still as good as new, don't want to part with it yet.

I think this firmware makes the 3G usable again, but at the end of the day you can only do so much with the hardware at your disposal. Also given the current release cycles iOS 4 will probably be the last release for the 3G anyway.

Perhaps some other improvements will filter through with future updates to 4, but given how amazingly transparent Apple are when it comes to such things, it's anyone's guess.

I'd been holding off upgrading my 3G but it looks like this may be a worthwhile update but if not what can I do to make downgrading back to 3.1.3 possible?

It's all about whether you've saved your 3.3.1 SHSH blobs on cydia or not. These are unique identifiers, published by Apple, you have to catch them and back them up, before it's too late. If you are too late, Apple stops publishing them and there's nothing you can do.

Ok, so since I have no idea how I would do that I'm guessing it's too late :D

I'll wait until there's more feedback, and a jailbreak, before I upgrade mine.

Well if you jailbroke it before and tapped "make my life easier" in Cydia you have done it .

May have done that come to think of it . . .

Edit: ok I just noticed that option now and clicked on it.
