iPhone 4S dropping connectivity

For some or other reason my iPhone 4S is dropping connection with MTN on quite a regular basis. What could be the problem? I have restarted the phone after I became aware of the situation. The carrier is MTN and I am based in Port Elizabeth.

Any suggestion on how to address the matter?

If 3G is turned ON, then turn it OFF. Go into settings, general, network, enable 3G (TURN OFF)

Keeping 3G to ON, forces your phone to connect to a 3G tower. In most areas 3G towers are not nearly as numerous as EDGE towers, so you will find that you will consistently get better signals when connecting to EDGE towers exclusively. Then only switch to 3G if and when you need fast data
