Was sitting at the swimming pool last night and the phone fell out of my pocket. It fell about 20cm and the whole screen is cracked. Does anyone know where I can replace the screen?

They don't replace the screen afaik. They replace the phone. Whether you pay for it or not depends on your warranty or insurance.

The new iPhone 5 screen is very expensive because the LCD and digitizer are now one unified part to make the iPhone thinner. Before you only needed to replace the digitizer, now you have to replace the LCD as well. I have used ifix to replace the digitizer of an iPad2 and they provided good service. It appears they charge R3999 for an iPhone 5 screen assembly, ouch. I hope you have insurance.

I'm curious, did you have a cover on your phone?

Go to ifix.co.za, they have branches around SA, they fix problems like this

yep. its called a samsung... you can drop it 3 meters and it just bounces. :D

/sry about your loss though. i would be furious at apple for selling me something so fragile in the name of style. if only they made their phones as tough as their laptops.

Buddy at work broke his Samsung S3 in the same way, It is just how the phone lands. Phones with gorilla glass (samsungs and iphones) can normally handle landing face down with no problems but if it lands on a corner then the screen cracks. Murphys law dictates that phones falling out of pockets land on their corners.

Mine fell on my foot, and flopped face down, spiderwebbing my screen :(

Ouch, that sucks.

Interesting question here, and the first thing I thought of after reading the OP: given the choice, would you choose:
- your current situation?
- have the phone fall directly in the pool without the screen being cracked, but very likely suffering water damage?

I cracked my iPhone screen and I went and got it fixed in literally 10 mins... while I abused their coffee machine.
Paid for it on my card, claimed back from insurance, everything was peachy.

My repair was for a iPhone 4, but they also repair the 4s and 5. iSanitaryPads too.

Place is in North Riding, Johannesburg.

It's called "GMobile" (http://www.gmob.co.za/)

Was very impressed with their service. Top Notch.

Which iPhone model and how much did it cost, if you don't mind?

If you don't mind me asking did you have a protective case? Good luck with fix.

Droptests on youtube show the Iphone 5 surviving much higher drops than the S3.

iphone 4
R800 if i remember correctly.

Hi,
I've cracked my iPad 4 glass screen. Core Distribution wants me to courier the unit to their Technical Centre in Johannesburg (I am based in East London) and they will provide me with a quote for a replacement unit. They are not willing to provide me with a worst case scenario estimate. Has anyone else had their unit replaced by Core? Could you give me an idea of the cost involved?

I've had my iPad for less than a month. Sending it in to a repair centre (like iFix) to have the glass replaced means my warranty will be totally void. I am worried about taking that chance, hence considering getting a replacement unit.

I realise it won't be cheap, but it would still be nice if Core was able to give an estimate.

But sending the unit all the way to Johannesburg, then receiving a quote and realising it is possibly too expensive, then couriering it back to East London and then back to Johannesburg to a Repair Service provider and then back to East London again just sounds daft!

Any suggestions?

Ouch ! That's not gonna be cheap.

The thing with dropping the phone, is it's not the height that ends up nailing it, it's the angle. Saw plenty of those drop tests on YouTube, and both the iPhone and Samsung took a hiding, but the iPhone 5 proved a little stronger. Lesson ... Buy a decent protective case for around R200 and save yourself the heartache.
