iPhone 5 or S4

This is most probably the best argument for getting the Galaxy S4.

But the last straw, and one that got me really mad, was when I saw Apple's return policy - even if your brand new iPhone doesn't work properly and you return it, you won't get a new one, but a "refurbished" one.

And that was why the iPhone 3G was my first and last idevice ever. Never again.

Sweet. Why don't you change your nick to kngrob whilst your de-appling... :)

LOL....I guess I was just mad at myself for spending such an insane amount of money on a phone that needed constant 600MB updates when Apple just changed an icon in iOS.

Like I said, never again.

iOS just works?

I guess that's the phrase the first iSheep came up with when they realised they've been conned and paid three times the money they should have paid for their iphone.

So you say it "just works"? Try this with an iphone : make a phone call with an iPhone if you have not activated it yet. Nope? Doesn't want to ring? So it doesn't just work.

Then put the same sim in any Android phone and make your phone call, without any activation needed.

Now drag and drop a movie from your computer to your iPhone...oops, it doesn't work! You need iTunes. Bummer.

Think I'll just stop here, before embarrassing you too much. ;)

I'm an Android user. Always have been. The amount of apps constantly crashing is insane. The amount of times I have to reboot is out of control. The list carries on somewhat, but i don't feel the need to have to justify my new choice in OS.

If downloading a program is a hassle for you, you really shouldn't be on a technology forum.

You have a problem with the phone. I am running rooted JB with a modified kernel. It runs like a swiss watch.

Problem is, it has been on my S2, Note 1, and now the S3. Not the exact same problems, but similar. I also rooted both the S2 and Note 1 to the better ROMS out at the time, same problems. Also, I find touch wiz on the S3 laggy. That's also the issue, why should we have to Root the phone for it to run any better than already promised? It has been marketed as this ultimate handset, but yet has so many flaws.

Samsung's warranty is the only thing that stands out. 2 repairs is a big deal, I must say. I am waiting for the new iPhone reveal, the Note 3, and the Nexus 5, and will be basing my upgrade on those.

Not arguing your issues here, but the last time I had serious lagging on my, was when I was on ICS and picked the wrong governor and scheduler for the undervolting applied. JB is running very smooth - even with the leaked Spanish FW earlier in the year. The lagging is minimal and the kernel used was Philz which is complete stock apart from root injection which does not affect the operation of the phone. kingrob has not rooted his and the problems you describe has not surfaced from what I read from his posts - his phone is completely stock (only problem he has is gettin a 515 ... <sigh>) ... anyway ... so you don't have to root your phone at all to get a smooth experience. I have in the past had apps force close on me, but I promptly uninstalled the crap since it was bad app programming that caused the problem and not the firmware. I have handled a couple of S3's and not once had a force close or laggy experience with them. I can not speak for the Note since I have never handled one of those. My guess would be that you like a certain resource hungry app running in the background and messing with your phones. I sincerely hope that you find joy in your next phone

How can one have a decent experience and another person have had the opposite?

I had iOS before I had an Android and everyone warned about the crashing and errors. I took the plunge anyhow and even rooted it - hardly have issues. I *do* have more than iOS - but it's negligable

or check out my office.

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/550547-What-Smartphone-to-get-now/page11

here we have an S4, Xperia Z, HTC one, Nokia Lumina 920, BB Z10 and a iphone 5.

Personally I do not like iOS, its limiting over priced and does not work, you cant just copy a movie over. you can not uninstall an app that came with the phone that takes up space.
my opinion of apple products are like clothes from Abecrombie and Fitch. this is your shirt this is your pants this is how you wear them no you make not wear that shirt with those pants, even though we make both.

Android is just better, you can do more and get the phone to be your phone. you can put the apps where you want them, you can install what you want to install. you can do what you want to do. on ios you can only do what they tell you. and even if you jailbreak an iPhone you still cant change the colour of the LED to be what you want it to be, you cant just plug the phone into your grandmother's computer and copy a movie over to her computer.

in 2009 or 2010 it was the best phone. but lets face it, the S2 was better than the iPhone 4s and the S3 was better than the iPhone 5 and it came out before it. and here I am talking about hardware, something ever apple iSheep is avoiding to talk about because apple cannot match any of the big 3 there.

the question you should be asking is what ROM am I going to install on my new android device.

I'd just like to mention that, in my experience with about 5 different Android devices, crashing apps is a rare occurrence - it hardly ever happens to me. When it does happen, it is usually a bug in the app (as can be checked in Google Play app reviews).

If you just use your phone for the most basic functionality get the iPhone. If you want more freedom get the HTC One

S4 - far more powerful than an iPhone 5 in every regard. Better display, better processor, better warranty, better everything.

Get an iPhone if u only make calls, text or play music.

iPhone has better build quality in my opinion. It really depends on what one values.

S4 for me though.

Build quality is all.
Played with friends iPhone 5 the other day. That tiny display is terrible.

I would really like an iPhone 5 if it wasn't for the display. It feels tall and thin and very strange.

Not to mention all the apps. iTunes App Store is still a level of quality ahead for me, which is why I'm faintly amused by all the 'basic functionality' threads. An android phone is great if your want to customize it, till you get bored of customizing and realise that the underlying software is as buggy and incoherent as ever and get frustrated with the crashes and slowdowns and janky scrolling.

What phone are you getting crashes and slowdowns and janky scrolling?
I think Android needs fast hardware to run fluidly and that in itself is a flaw, but on my phone I have no crashes and no slowdowns.

I like both Apple and Android though.

That was on an Xperia V. It was on a custom rom on Nova Launcher going between widgets and homescreens and the apps that the widgets pointed to.

I also think the iPhone5 shape is pretty odd. I actually still prefer the 3.5" size on a phone. But I wish they'd make a large screen iPhone. It seems stupid not to. I just find, and it's totally a personal thing, but iOS is a much more robust OS and more thoroughly developed. On Android you're able to do whatever you want in terms of customisation, but it's just painting over a very static, underdeveloped user experience. There's still not one really great music app; the animations are nonexistent; there's not even really a true physics engine. r

I'm faintly amused by your crashes / slowdowns and janky scrolling comment too. My Sensation, S3 and S4 never suffered any of this.

The camera app on my S4 would cause the phone to reboot on the odd occasion, but that was fixed with a software update.
